12 tb external harddrive

I recently purchased a 12tb external harddrive from Amazon. I’ve plugged it in and it’s only showing 10.9tb usable space.

Can someone tell me if this is correct as it seems quite a lot less then the 12tb advertised ?.

Also I’m going to use this external harddrive to store my movies on for Plex but I’m finding the drive keeps going to sleep is there a way to stop this from happening.

Appreciate any feedback on this

Many thanks

Yes, that’s correct.

All Manufacturers use Base 10 Math to keep it simple for the consumer

Computers and Operating Systems use Base 2 Math

so, 12TB (Base 10) = 10.9139TB (Base 2)

For the drive going to sleep, you can search for WD Drive Manager or a 3rd Party Solution.

Thank you for your help it’s really appreciated

hard disk vendors long ago flunked basic math by using decimal over top of binary

it has festered into unbelievable ■■■■ today

KB, MB, GB, TB and so on are now perverted from the original JEDEC standards by some upstart

binary uses the CPU shift right and left for multiply and divide
