I have OS 64 bit windows 7 the light on the front is blinking the the drive vibrates like it is running. When i go to my computer the drive shows up but i’m not able to access it, and then i’m prompted to format the disk to be able to use. I don’t want to format it beacuse i have data and pics i don’t want to lose. Please help!!!
Look in Disk Management and look down by the bars what does it say there anything like Raw?
yes it says RAW
Well that means somethiing is corrupt. Test Disk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk might restore it. There are data recovery programs in this link post 5 http://community.wdc.com/t5/My-Passport-for-PC/Western-Digital-External-Hard-Drive-my-files-lost/td-p/243020
You can also try downloading a Linux Live CD and burn it and boot from that and see if data is accessible. As a last resort the command prompt to convert FAT32 to NTFS sometimes repairs the Raw partition.Hhere is a link describing that http://support.microsoft.com/kb/214579 when you open command prompt right click and run as administrator.
