Please Please !!! Stop using JAVA web app!!!
The Purpose of a web interface is to easily assess your files from a computer "outside" your network. So it could be your friends computer or some other machine which MIGHT NOT Most propabily have the latest version of java installed.
If you want to be the big guy in this space please invest some recources on UX / UI in developing a cool interface which is written in HTML / CSS and use the "preferable" plugin to upload files called "Adobe Flash".
Please take Dropbox and google drive as your benchmark and ask the your Java guy to update himself with some in the trend web technologies.
I see a lot of potential but please do it right! User Experience plays a LOT in being popular.
I brought the MY Book Live but have stopped using it because the application has issues on windows 7 (Support never got back to me, so that's poor too!)
And it's not quit usable by my dad and mom. So switched back to OwnCloud!!!
This is my problem for ever and ever:
- like WD, many companies offer FILE BACKUP
- none offer Image Backup on a portable hard disk
A. This is what I need:
1. a fast portable and pocketable hard disk with usb 3.0 (like WD Passport or so)
2. software to make an Image Backup of a PC's Hard Drive(s) (like drive C to this prtable disk
3. the software to do this and also to recover the PC's HD, should be installed and ready ON THE PORTABLE HD (from preferably Western Digital)
Why? Well, I work in my external office on a PC or Laptop. Just before I leave to my home office or go home, I want to make an Image Backup of my PC/Laptop at the office, so, just in case my PC's HD crashes (I will keep them running, so I can use the over the Internet), I can simply restore the PC by installing a new HD and than, at first standard startup, I will have the Portable Disk plugged in at the PC's USB 3.0, and the software (of WD) on the Portable Hard Disk will ask me if I want to restore the Image Backup on my PC!!!!!
Now I can only achieve this approximately by buying as many licences as I have PC,s/laptops etc. and installing this software on each PC etc. and than first making a basic startup/recover DVD, for each PC etc. and having a portable harddisk dedicated for each pc.
Except the extra investment for the licences, the most important thing is that it is still very complicated, especially if you have a lot of pc's and employees.
Now, WD, Seagate, etc. all offer the very slow FILE BACKUP, I mean slow in case you need to recover your stuff from a crash on a PC. It is nice to have copies of files, but than still I would need to reinstall all the programs after first having recovered my OS. This has happened several times to me over the last decade and it sets you back like 10 to 14 days if this occurs.
Don't get me all wrong, it is also good to have copies of (important) files by using File Backup, also to work on these files at other PC's, but for this I can also use DropBox, Google Drive, Cubby etc. but it is too much to try or impossible to have your system-backup in a Dropbox.
This is what I want: PC's HD faillure? No problem: just install a new HD, plug-in WD passport USB 3.0, reinstal the right image file --> within 1 hour I am back and running my PC!!!!!!!
When it is made simple to use, it is simple to make it a routine to Make an Image Backup everyday/time I leave the office and have this done with every PC or even from a server. The only restriction would be "classified files", but this can be solved through polivy.
Thanks for listening/reeding my bad English, hopefully everyone can understand my problem and effort to solve this.
I just bought a copy of WD Smartware Pro and installed it only to realize it doesn't support backing up to a mapped network drive. I foolishly assumed it would do this considering it is shipped with WD network drives.
As I keep my backups on a home server (stuffed with WD hard drives, funnily enough), I'd like the ability to back up my data to a mapped network location.
Thank you for your consideration.
We find WD Photo an excellent tool to browse and show people our library of photos (currently about 34,000)
It would be so COOL to be able to use CHROMECAST to easily display this onto our big TV using a tablet or phone app to control.
It would be amazing if there could be an SDK available to other developers to create applications to run on the WDTV. I'm thinking it would allow other services to be able to add their service to the WDTV as well as addition content like games, screensavers and themes.
I have recently been using WD apps on a small tablet as a digital picture frame. I love this because my pics automatically upload to my personal cloud on wifi. Only thing I don't like is it is boring after a while when compared to the effects on my Windows 7 screen saver slide show. There I get collages, background changes, black and white and so on. So I would like to see more photo effects for the WD Photos Classic app. There are lots of other apps out there that have some of these effects but then there is the issue of safty using them. Is this do-able? Has it been done?
for the My Cloud desktop app probably all the apps, when you email a file it will send a link to the file (good), when u email a Folder lets say "bunny" it sends a link to a ZIP file containing the whole directory structure where only the last directory has the files in it. e.g. in the ZIP file \share\mike\dog\smile\cat\bunny\*.* . you have to click all the dir to get to bunny anf then the files.?
why would I want anyone else to see the complete path of what i am sending them
should be a ZIP file containing \bunny\*.*

I have my MBL NAS working during the day, but usually during the night, or in case I go on vacation, I tend to switch off all my multimedia devices, by just switching off power from the main power switch. This is OK with almost all devices, which are already in standby, but not so safe with a NAS, for which a safe switch off is preferable.
I would consider very helpful the possibility to switch off the devide (safely) from the MyCloud app. Similar function is already available on the PC application WD Quick VIew.
It seems that the iOS version of the My Cloud app does not have the Select All button like the Android version has, nor any other options to select all pics in one folder at once.
Please add a Select All button into the My Cloud app for iOS or some other option to do this. It would be most convenient for people with, say, 100+ photos who have to manually click each one.
The W8 App was a good start, but there are lots of important Features which are yet missing. Is this the correct Place to ask fort them?
- manual refresh of index
- filter and sort citerias
- open in xyz app function
- in-app search icon (yes i know its possible with charm)
- additional "documents" or "other" section/category
- basic edit functions for pictures
- delete / copy /move / rename function
I would appreciate if other users could add more ideas or wishes...
PS: i am a tablet user... (Surface RT)
I really like WD's My Book Live, have 2 and will buy more when it works well enough. The new app is really faster than the previous method of connecting, but lost a lot compared to the use of Finder.
I cannot copy files, dragging and dropping between folders - I cannot have two folders visible. I cannot search or filter. I cannot see images without opening or do a quick view.
It's an app. Albeit shiny.
So this is what I need to finally leave
the NSA, sorry, Dropbox, SugarSunc and Google Drive:
1. Use Finder, like Dropbox does - could be a local folder sync:ed to the WD drive, if only performance is ok, could be a folder to the drive - could be both for different uses (such as using files offline, just like Dropbox);
2. Add search - I have all of my past business life on these drives but it is not easy (to say impossible) to search within them. Soadd indexing to the drive OS and either make it possible to search with Spotlight or add a tool to search from Finder.
3. Be able to share a folder with outside parties (nice to have, but I can keep using Dropbox for this);
4. And if you really want to integrate with dropbox, make the integration between the drive and Dropbox, not at the app level.
I could see many combinations for music play like "speaker + media center + app" in the market these days. I believe this is a trend especially for music. People may see the music list on the phone and just touch it to play. I thought this is supported by WD TV Live Hub, but it seems not. I have "Live Hub - Receiver - Speaker - TV". I may not need to turn on TV if it is supported.
I saw another post which someone asked to play to any DLNA device. I found an app to support it which is "WD TV Live Media Player by Zappo TV". But this was very bad... slow and bad UI.
We may not need to play to another DLNA device. It would be great if we can just play on Live Hub from an app. I believe many people is waiting the kind of app.
As it has become standard for internet service providers to throttle upload capability limiting it to 4mbs at best we have a problem with a choke point in cloud computing and if you find a way to make this work it will make you famous. Let's say that I REALLY was determined to get around this and wanted to double or triple my upload speed from my tower at home or business so that it could upload fast enough to respond to multiple devices. Lets say that I either payed for the ISP to connect multiple routers or had access to multiple routers. Now I need a wireless storage device that can use the multiple upload feeds simultaneously, effectively increasing the upload rate exponentially by how many wireless accounts I array to work together in this manner. Until the ISP's change their upload policies I do not see any other means around this problem. Even if you could find a way to make different devices send and recieve switching between different wireless networks connected simultaneously much like our Multi-core prosessors handle multiple threads.
Most other DVD/Video cataloging software/programs ignore the first word(s) "A" and "The" when sorting titles.
e.g. "A Knight's Tale" is sorted within the "K's", "The Blind Side" is within the "B's", etc.
...or even better, like Invelos' DVD Profiler, allow me to input a sort title. For instance, "Mission Impossible 3".
Some databases list it as MI:3, some as M:I:3, or Mission: Impossible-3, etc. All of them sort differently. I'd want then to sort in the order they were released.
That way, I can rename "The Thomas Crown Affair" to "Thomas Crown 1968" and "Thomas Crown 1999" -
(I'd really like to edit the "Title Display" field too!!)
It would be nice to be able to use Spotify with the WD Android remote without turning on the TV.
