New Idea

After attaching a WD MyBook drive via USB3 port to the EX2, I realized the whole drive becomes a share and that too a public share, allowing all my users coming in from outside to delete stuff there.

1. I would like to create shares from specific root directory folders on the USB drive and not the whole USB drive to become a share.

2. More importantly, I would like to configure permissions on this share from the attached USB drive. I have friends coming in from outside and I would like to be able to configure who has what access on this share. Without at least this level of permissions, this USB facility on the EX2 is really not secure for most users.

3. Finally, I would like to be able to turn ftp ON or OFF on this USB share - just like the shares on EX2 where I can turn ftp ON/OFF individually on the shares. For example, I chose to turn ftp off for the Public share but kept ftp ON my other EX2 shares, and would like to do the same to the USB attached drive share.

FYI - I am using a Windows formatted USB (My Book) drive for the USB share.

Thanks for the suggestion. We have already added permission settings to this. There is no plan to change the share method by individual folder in a USB drive.

MyCloud EX4 Backup Setup - Entire EX4 NAS in one job.

I would like to have the ability to backup my enitre EX4 to an external USB drive.  I know the feature is already in the unit, but you have to schedule one folder at a time, so it would be nice to schedule the whole unit, and then only have it backup the files that have changed, and not the whole unit. It could be kept in one folder on the USB drive, instead of creating individual folders with dates and times. Also would like to see the ability to remove permissions from the USB backup share so that you can restrict who sees all the data from the EX4.

My net N900 FTP WAN

Make FTP through WAN possible.

(Who needs FTP only in the LAN network?)

Also the FTP  password configuration is not extensive enough.

Maybe more password/login possibilities...

If STATIC ARP (for WOL through WAN) and  FTP (WAN)   would be implemented this router would be complete!

WD My Live Book: Set maximum share size(s).

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎04-14-2013 03:16 AM

I think that almost everyone would like to be able to set the maximum size for each share, here are a few examples...

1. Parents want unlimited share size(s), but for each of their kids they wish to limit the share size for each of them so that it doesn't get spammed with stuff that doesn't need to be there. I know a few parents would be very happy if their children's homework etc was stored on the HD rather than just their computer as a back up.

2. Freaks like me will want to set specific share sizes just to allow us to keep things organized and up together.

3. A lot of people have Macs and currently the timemachine will use up the entire drive, it is one heck of a hogger. Since Apple have yet to fix this, and may never do...this may be great for users so they can set a limit on their timemachine share.

I can think of loads of reasons why this would be a great feature, and to be honest it is the only feature (or rather lack of)  which is preventing me from buying myself one; though I know a lot of people who already own one or more of these, and therefore I am very interested in at least one for myself.

PS: It may be an idea to also allow some shared "No Limit", thus can use whatever free/usable space is remaining, but those with limits can only use up to the limit(s) set.

PPS: Might also be worth concidering whether or not to have share limits per user as well as per share. This could be a max limit for a user regardless of which shared they are using, or it could be a max limit for them within a specific share.

I think at the end of the day, I could be happy to create a share for each person and set a limit on those shares, leaving mine with 'No Limit'.

Many thanks,

Shane

Dear all,

I had the problem that all the time when I connected the MyPassport to the My Book Live Duo and I insert the right password a Error appeared.

After I formatted the MyPassport and take a new passeord (shorter and without special signs I was able to unlock the MyPassport in the dashboard of the My Book Live Duo.

For next update of SW please take out this limitation or fix the possible bug.

Thx

I have encountered this a few times now and it is easy to reproduce.  If yuo are using one MBL to backup another using Saferpoint, this works as designed along with scheduled backups etc.  BUT if the primary NAS on which the saferpoints are setup loses its connection to the secondary NAS which receives the backup it will lose the Safepoint.  This condition applies at any time not just when the safepoint is being created or updated.  Typical scenarios which will trigger this condition include shutting down the secondary NAS or more likely rebooting the router which connects the two drives.

For now, I have learned that I must shutdown the pimary NAS before performing any mainteance on the router or bringing down the secondary drive.  In addition, if I bring down both NAS, they must be brought up with the backup coming up first and the primary only being brought back when the backup is fully up and avialable across the network.

Please can Safepoint be modified to only poll for the secondary when a safepoint is being updated or created. Failing that, could we include the safepoint settings within the settings you can backup so the safepoint can be brought back shoud it be lost in this way?

WD My Book Live - Direct USB copy

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎02-01-2013 11:54 AM

WD My Book Live and Live Duo should implement a direct USB copy from an attached USB drive.

This will improve user experience when copying large amount of data hrough an high speed channel (USB) compared to network transfer. It's worth noticing that other WD products (such as WD TV Live Hub) already implement this feature.

Regards,

Fred

With seven, 1 GigE ports,  I'd really like to see the N900 support IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation.

It would be acceptable if only two of the seven ports were configurable for this standard.

This would be a competitive advantage as external NAS units gain in capacity, especially with WD Red NAS drives!

Hello WD,

why there's no setting that allows the set to a channel width in wireless settings to only 40MHz. Please add this setup to the firmware that you can pick and choose 40Mhz only, thanks.

Functional "WOL" implementation

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎01-22-2013 06:49 AM

This is in reply to the entry "Wake On Lan (WOL) support for My Book Live". This entry has been set to status "Not planned" by WD staff and has apparently been locked. Which, if you permit me saying, is a pretty dumb approach, as it doesn't allow users to post a working solution even if WD staff is not interested in finding one.

The solution posted in the other topic by stefan29 almost works.

If one replaces the shutdown command with hdparm -y /dev/sda it becomes a fully functional solution, and indeed better than actual WOL.

hdparm -y will immediately cause the drive to go into low power standby mode (spin down), unless or until there is disk activity.

As soon as you access data on My Book again and the data is not in the buffer cache (i.e. disk access is necessary), the drive spins up again. There is obviously a small delay (2-3 seconds), but this is not nearly the same impact as when booting (30-40 seconds). No pulling cables, no special tricks necessary.

My "My Book Live" draws 7W with the disk running, 9.2 to 9.5W with disk activity, and 5W with the disk turned off. However, it also draws 5W when turned off completely  (uh... AC adapter efficiency, anyone?), so there is really not much of a point of going any further than spinning down the disk.

Modified cron script (inspired by stefan29's original, stripped out comments and such):

#!/bin/sh

PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/opt/bin:/opt/sbin

MYIP=$( ifconfig eth0 | grep "inet " | cut -d: -f2 | cut -d " " -f1 )
NETWORK=$( echo "$MYIP" | cut -d. -f-3 )
CLIENTS=$NETWORK.0/24
ROUTERIP=$( route -n | grep ^0.0.0.0 | awk '{print $2;}' ),$NETWORK.254

TIMEOUTFILE=/tmp/spindown_imminent

if nmap -snPP $CLIENTS --exclude $MYIP,$ROUTERIP | grep -q "\(0 hosts up\)" ; then

	if test -f $TIMEOUTFILE ; then
		rm $TIMEOUTFILE
		hdparm -y /dev/sda
	else
		touch $TIMEOUTFILE
	fi
else
	if test -f $TIMEOUTFILE ; then
		rm $TIMEOUTFILE
	fi

My Book Live- needs better support for iOS

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎01-21-2013 11:34 AM

Hi,

I have a 2 TB My Book Live that I use with iPAD and iPhone as remote devices.  It is generally working well.  I have a few suggestions for better deployment of this product, some iOS specific and some general:

-1. Please provide upload capability for WD 2go on iPad and iPhone.  This exists for Android and also WD Photos on iOS. Not sure if this is an oversight.  Appstore description says you should be able to do this.  When you do this, please do not limit it just photos. It should be for any files.

2.  Please provide capability to  be able to email a link to a Folder, not just a file.  This way, I can share a whole album by email.  I know you can select multiple photos from WD Photos. It is not the same thing.

3.  It is not possible to copy files between Dropbox and WD 2go even though documentation and the app description on Apple's Appstore says otherwise.

4.  Why limit WD Photos to /Public folder only.  There are many reasons why one wants set up other public and shared folders and be able to view photos and videos from those folders that the remote device has access to.

Thank you,

kv001

I have a Pioneer N-30 network player which connects with my My Net N900 Central router.

I have +/- 1500 albums with +/- 1500 different artists on them (compilation disks with lots of artists on 1 cd).

Most of the times I just want to play a complete album, in the order in which it was originally recorded.

The ways to get to the albums is via "Album" or "Artist/album".

These options take too long, because there are 1500 entries, and only 5 lines on my pioneer screen.

What would help enormously is provide a "Artist Index/Artist/Album", like there already is an "Artist Index/Artist" right now. If there would be an option to select an album in that option, that would be very beneficial with a network player like mine.

It's not possible to enter search criteria on it, only scroll down the list. So the smaller the list the better.

Artist Index works perfectly for that : Only artists with the correct begin letters (e.g. A, B or C) will be shown.

When choosing an artist in the resulting screen, I would like to have the option to select an album of that artist, and when the album is selected, present the titles of that album.

That is the second half of my enhancements : Present the tracks in the correct order.

In the existing "Album" search, it presents the tracks in track order, but not correctly : It plays track 1 first, then 10, 11, 12, 13, ..., and after that tracks 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. So it tries to order by track number, but does that alphabetically, so that 10 goes before 2.

Please correct it, so that when choosing "Album", it presents the tracks in real track number order.

The same should be the sorting order for "Artist/Album". The sorting order is alphabetically on track name right now, this should be track number.

The same should be the sorting order for "Folder". The sorting order is alphabetically on track name right now, this should be track number.

Also for the new "Artist Index/Artist/Album" the sorting order should be track number.

Safepoint backup to external NAS

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎01-11-2013 10:49 AM

Safepoint feature is great for on site backups.

For security reasons i like it better when it's an off site backup. (for theft/fire/crashing planes etc)

It would be great if safepoint can communicate with other WDC devices by means of the WD2go security

to connect to your own offsite NAS.

Several idea's with rsync are on the forum, but need opening the ssh and direct access features.

Hope the info for the idea works towards an option.

WD MyNet parental control features

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎01-08-2013 10:38 AM

  1. It would be nice to be able to specify key words in the internet parental control system. The 7 level of filtering is not enough.
  2. It would be nice to expose all the details of the filtering categories so that a custom level can be made by the client.
  3. Another nice feature would be to allow the client to unregister a router from the we internet security system.
  4. If a programmed rebooting makes it more stable, you could actually program the router to reboot itself at a specific time (can be set by the client). This is a feature seen in some Belkin routers. This has to be written in the firmware.
  5. It would be nice if the client can click one of the listed devices and reserve it instead of manually enter all the information. This feature is found in D-Link routers since the early days.

Thank you.

Felix

Could anyone inform me when the new firmware upgrade will be available for my 8TB WD ShareSpace, which will include OS X Mountain Lion?   I currently cannot use Time Machine on my iMac or MacBook Pro because the OS cannot find my ShareSpace Backup drive, which is has been designed for Time Machine in mind.   Since I upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion this summer my WD ShareSpace Backup drive has been rendered useless, which is very annoying because I purchased my WD ShareSpace NAS  for backing up my files, photos and music files.

Could you please tell me if or when a new firmware upgrade will be available for WD ShareSpace NAS’s, which includes OS X Mountain Lion.  If WD is no longer supporting WD ShareSpace drive I would like to know so I can go out and purchase an alternative NAS.

- Setting - Utilities - Reboot / Shutdown and either click Reboot or Shutdown.

I would like to see a Drop Down style action, maybe something like this ?

Photos/Video to Messenger on iOS

At a minimum, it would be nice to be able to touch and hold a picture in WD2GO and WD Photos and copy the image to the devices clipboard ready to paste into a text or iMessage.

Even better?

Allow the app to select multiple images and or a video and "open with" Messenger.

There is a 4GB limitation when attempting to remotely transfer files (after mapping a drive using the wd2go.com website interface and java applet) from the WD My Book Live Duo Personal Cloud Storage device due to the limitations of WebDAV.  Granted you can enable FTP as a potential workaround, that is not a secure file transfer protocol and security of device logon information could be compromised as a result.  With Secure FTP capability, even though WebDAV is unusable for remote large file (>4gb) transfersyou could use a secure FTP protocol to transfer files in between the cloud storage unit and your laptop, PC, etc. to circumvent the limitations of WebDAV.  I am surprised that WD markets this product as being able to share and access your files from anywhere when that is not entirely true.  You can do so only if your files do not exceed the size limitation of 4gb which, per my research, is not disclaimed in any documentation (user manual, product sheets, etc.) that I have thus far seen.

Moving files between shares on network drives

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎11-02-2012 03:08 AM

Currently, when I have to move files between shares, it seems as if the file is downloaded to my pc, and then copied to the other share. I say this because the speed of transfer is directly related to the speed of my network connection. When I am connected to a 1gb etherenet connection it is very fast. If however, I am on a wireless network, speed is very slow.

I recommend something like the old norton commander or the linux midinight commander utility on the drive itself to allow transfer of files between shares at local disk speed irrespective of the network connection speed.
