Network Crashes During File Transfer and Slow Transfer Speeds

Status: In Review
by ‎02-08-2013 04:57 PM - edited ‎02-09-2013 12:31 PM

Which firmware were you using?

3.09.18

What exactly happened?

Connect router to usb wifi dongle and configure.

Connect to WDTV Live Hub from PC (windows 7) and transfer a a video to the device.

File will transfer for 5 or so minutes and then stop and kill my entire network from the router up causing my wireless router to spontanously reboot. This happens regardless of the firmware on the router (router is an Asus RT-AC66U running its latest stock firmware). I even put a repeater router running ddwrt in front of it tied directly to the live hub through ethernet and it will still crash. Only thing I have not done is go and use wireshark to watch the packets right before it crashes, but I rather not have to go that far to figure it out. Logs in my router are not saying much other than it rebooted. The other router is old as dirt (10 year old linksys wrt54g) and cannot use it full time for any long length.

I don't think a router should allow one device to crash it, but at the same time, there's also a problem with the device causing it to crash. I'll probably open an issue with Asus as well about it, but even if it stops it from crashing on the router, the device is still doing something odd to make it crash.

Also transfer speeds are ridiculously slow 70-200 KB/s over wireless and it's less than 30feet away. Speeds are this bad whether using the repeater and ethernet or using a usb wifi dongle. I tried two different usb dongles as well (a netgear wireless n and also a rosewell one just to verify those, but hardware does not seem to be the issue if it keeps doing it regardless when tied to ethernet or 2 seperate usb dongles.

No other devices in my house have this issue when transferring files between any of them on my network and I have something running everything (Kubuntu, Debian Wheezy, Windows 8, Windows 7, several versions of Android on a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, HP Touchpad). Only issue seems to be the media hub.

What you were doing?

Answered above.

What hardware and media were you using?

Mentioned above

Does it happen every time?

Yes, consistantly happens.

Does it happen with previous firmware?

Tried with 3.07.1 by reverting to it. Still crashes and still slow.

Does power cycling the unit solve it?

No.

Does resetting to factory defaults solve it?

No. Does not help doing it on the router or on the media hub.

Have you tried this on other devices?

Yes, those mentioned above.

Firmware: 3.06.14

Issue: After a few minutes stopped recognizing wifi network. Workaround: reset device, select wifi and connect. Then, same problem again (without doing anything at all). And so on.

Hardware: Motorola cablemodem provided by my Cable company. ASUS NB10 dongle connected to my Live Hub TV. I tried the ASUS USB on a computer and works perfect.

Same issue in the lasts 2 firmware's.

I already power cycled the device.

Any suggestion ?

Wireless Adapters BROKEN since Firmware 3.00.28

Status: In Review
by ‎04-23-2012 04:14 PM - edited ‎04-23-2012 04:29 PM

-    Which firmware?

3.00.28, 3.01.19, 3.03.12, 3.03.16

-     What happened?

Once firmware is updated to 3.00.28 or above, WiFi adapter can no longer preform SSID scans, shows NO results. Cannot Connect Manually to ANY network (WPA, WEP protected Nor Completely Open network). WDTV Live Hub recognizes the card but fails to initialize or attempt SSID scans of any kind.

wireless adapter no longer functions with ANY of these firmware versions. ONLY works with firmware 2.08.13

      Listed as compatible on http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5688/~/list-of-compatible-devices-for-the-wd-tv-live...

Belkin N1 Wireless USB adapterF7D1102tt1000tt

-     What were you doing?

Issue occurred after upgrading to latest firmware version.

-     Does this happen every time?

YES With ALL firmware versions beyond 2.08.13

-     What hardware and media were you using?

North American hardware version

-     Did this happen with previous firmware?

YES.. Occurs with all versions after version 2.08.13

-     Does power cycling the unit solve this?

No.

-     Does resetting to factory defaults solve this?

No

-     Have you tried this on other devices?

YES

Support engineers could not reproduce the problem according to WD.. But I suspect that they were using the hardware with the out of box firmware which is 2.08.13.. Of course you can't reproduce the problem. IT WORKS with that version of the firmware, but was broken in 3.00.28 and continues to be broken 3 firmware versions later!

Personally I think WD needs to get back to the basic functionality of it's hardware instead of being concerned with releasing firmware updates to correct a minor glitch with the MLB feature they added in firmware 3.03.12. FIX your wifi compatibility problem so the rest of us can update our firmware and not have to deal with the bugs that were associated with version 2.08.13

I have two WD TV Live Hub media players, so far I have had only one of them connected wireless to internet with a D-Link N 150 Wireless USB adapter (DWA-125). Now I try to connect the other media player with a new USB adapter (DWA-125) but can´t get any network connection.

If I use the first USB adapter works automatically on both WD Hubs, but can´t get the two players to connect at the same time.

I already tested the second USB DWA-125 and it works fine with laptop and PC.

I know this seems weird, but it is the only possible remaining exlpanation.  I recently was forced by my ISP into chaning my wireless modem/router.  The new one is an SMC SMCD3GN - which is the same as another model, but branded with Rogers (the cable internet provider).  Basically, the wifi will work until I connect the WDTV.  The it is gone.  I will go a few days using wireless on tablets, phones and my PS3, and the moment I set up the WDTV, and it connects, the network disappears and the light on the modem that indicates wifi starts blinking slowly and evenly, as opposed to quickly and randomly.  I then have to do a factory reset and select a new password for the network, nothing else works.

Any ideas?

WD TV Live Hub freezing more often than usual

Status: New
by on ‎02-13-2013 07:39 PM

Which firmware were you using?

3.09.18

What exactly happened?

My hub tends to freeze a lot when I connect my WD MyBook to transfer content. When I first turn it on and my hard drive is plugged in through USB and it says "compiling media library..." at the top, thats where it freezes alot. I also have it connected to ethernet cord sometimes to add the content info for my files, but even when the ethernet cord isnt plugged in, it still tends to freeze, so I dont think that it matters if I have it connected or not but could be wrong. Even sometimes it takes so long for that compiling media library to finish that the Hub will just restart on its own and go through the process all over again. Sometimes after it resets itself it doesnt freeze, but more often than not it keeps saying "compiling media library..." and it freezes up again.

What you were doing?

Transferring media off my HD to my Live Hub.

What hardware and media were you using?

My MyBook HD and WD TV Live Hub. Attempting to transfer movies and tv shows.

Does it happen every time?

Not at all the time, but a lot.

Does it happen with previous firmware?

I dont remember because I upgraded to the newest firmware pretty soon after I purchased my hub.

Does power cycling the unit solve it?

No

Does resetting to factory defaults solve it?

Havent tried that, wanted to save that as a last resort so I dont have to delete everything and have to load everything back onto my Hub all over again and worrying about dealing with it freezing or not transferring files properly.

Have you tried this on other devices?

These are my only two devices. The hard drive and Live Hub.

D-Link Xtreme N Dual Band USB adapterDWA-160vA2

Before the firmware upgrade the network speed was OK.
