Please help, no thumbnails or cover art appearing

hey guys, sorry, i’m really new to this, but i hope some of your geniuses can help me out…but I installed a few themes and gave them a go, they all worked fine for a day or so…but somehow after a little while my WDhub stopped showing the images for the movies.

When I first got it and updated the firmware to the latest one, it  automatically went and got all the info and pictures for all the movies I’d loaded inot the 1tb HDD. (Which was awesome)

Now they’ve disspeared and I don’t know how to get them back. I have tried these steps:

Deleting AND turning on/off my media library

Hard reset of the device

Restoring WD TV Live Hub to factory settings (Though I noticed this does not reset the firmware)

When I choose “get info” for a movie it finds everything (synopsis, actors, etc) but the images are blank…

I’m not a programmer, but I’m not a tech luddite either…maybe I know just enough to be dangerous to myself…

please help!

1st thing i would check is if the thumbnails are actually there … (located next to you media files)

eg.

Robocop.mkv

Robocop.xml

Robocop.metathumb   <----- this is the thumbnail image

Im assuming you have your WDTV Live Hub networked and the hard drive mapped on your PC so you can browse the contents of the internal hard drive.

If not … grab a USB stick put a movie on it … insert into the Live Hub … get the content info … remove the USB stick from the Live Hub (press the “Eject” button on the remote control 1st) then plug the USB into your computer and have a look and see if there is a thumbnail (metathumb)

A couple of posts back… some users are reporting funny things going on recently with their Live SMP & TMDB (The Movie Database)

http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Streaming/TMDB-not-working/m-p/737990#M30836

I’m not sure if that is the cause ?  just guessing

P.S. i’m on older firmware, so, my get content if stopped working a long time ago … but using XBMC and or Thumbgen today … it has no problems grabbing all the content info (Info, thumbs and backdrops)

Hey mate, thanks for replying… yep, I’ve mapped the WD as a drive, and I can see in there all fine.

When I go to the “movies” folder i’ve created on the WD… I see this:

.Captain Philips.backdrop

Captain Philips.avi

Captain Philips.metathumb

Captain Philips.xml

So yeah I have that metathumb file you mentioned…but I still get no pics. Also before it stopped working after 1 day, I noticed that I had another file in there called Captain Philips.jpg (That the WD created automatically) and that was all working great. But no matter what I do, I can’t get it to make those jpgs of all my movies again…

So I guess my questions are:

A. is it the jpg or metathumb that’s supposed to give me my cover art and backgound scrolling images
B. If i’ve got the metathumb file, why isn’t it doing anything

C. How can I get those jpegs back again?

Thanks for you time and help Joey

Sam

strange … i don’t know what’s going on (honestly)

A. The XML file gives you the backdrops  … (if you read the link i posted, that’s the problem … the SMP is getting the wrong URL)

B. Dunno (metathumb … i’m assuming gets cached in the SMP database, now, if this is dependant on the URL in the XML … then it won’t get cached because or the incorrect URL.)   Anyways, that’s just a wild Guess

(Remember i own a Live Hub and i use JPG’s never Metathumbs)

C. You can try this …

a “metathumb” is actually a jpg …  rename it (change the file extension) and you will see its a picture

so if you have all the metathumbs for you movies (which arent displaying)  and the jpg’s are displaying ?… then batch rename the metathumbs to jpgs as a temp solution.

eg.  create a notepad      Text Document.txt   open it, and type **   ren .metathumb .jpg    then save it as Rename.bat

copy and paste the Rename.bat file into the same directory you movies reside in … double click it and it will batch rename all the metathumb file extensions to jpg for all movies in that directory in a few seconds.

Hmm, I have the Hub (maybe I forgot to mention that, sorry)

I have the XML, but no backdrops…which is weird.

I tried to rename that metathumb File to a jpg, but it was only 1kb, and didn’t result in an image

I’ve hacked my way through thumbgen to try as a work around…but now I just get the movie image (generated my thumbgen) but no movie description

I guess I don’t understand why when I first hit “get info” on the hub itself, it did it’s little song and dance and populated ALL my movies with ALL the info. It was perfect…but now it’s all dissapeared. Surly if the general firmware had suddenly stopped working for that globally, this forum would be full of folks screaming?

Sorry (brainfade) … Yes, i meant Live Hub

I tried Thumbgen this afternoon … worked fine for me (Movie Info,Thumbs,Streaming Backdrops)

(Streaming backdrops… Options > Movie Info > Store Internet Links )

(You can have local backdrops … but that requires it bit more setup which i can’t get into right now. Streaming ones are much simpler to do and doesent take up any hdd space)

Hade you made sure in the options (Movieinfo export) to select XML and Live Hub Format ?

(guide by Tinwarble)

Hey Joey,

I didn’t really know which profile to choose on thumbgen that would be the best with the live hub on the latest firmware. Which one should I choose?

I actually took back the hub to Officeworks and got another one instead, so I’m going to try and leave that one as straight default and see if it works by just using the built in scraper. (I still don’t know why mine stopped scraping pics when I factory reset it)

I’ll give that a crack tonight and see what happens.  When I plugged in the first one, it seemed to update to the latest firmware automatically. Do you know if that’s a good thing?

Thumbgen Profile: WDTV Live Movies Sheet

I fear you will have the same issue with the brand new Live Hub as well.

Yeah I fear that too, but here’s hoping. I’ll set it up soon and report back.

Ok, well…crazy as it seems. The new unit shows everything perfectly. Here’s hoping it stays that way.

I’m a bit hesitant to load any themes, as it went bad after I did that last time.  What do you think I could have delted/changed on the last unit that even resorting to factory settings couldn’t undo?

Well, im happy to hear it’s working for you

“Themes” do not alter firmware or core functions of the device  (they only change the “Appearance”)

anyways, glad it’s working for you … (i’m running Firmware 2.07.17 and Do Not Have the option to “Get Content Info” anymore … since TMDB changed their API to version 3 … So, no thumbs … info, backdrops for me)

But, i’m not heatbroken about it, as i use XBMC (on PC) to get content info now for my movies … (and is pretty fast)

I can also (as an option) import this XMBC metadata (after exporting the Library to separate files) into Thumbgen to create moviesheets and stuff (in offline mode … which is pretty quick)

Hi… does anyone know why my d_ashboard, info sub & info main_ gone missing right after move to the next page?.  It only appeared after 20-30 seconds. However,no problems occur to focused title and page counter

Thank you in advance.

There’s a good chance it’s the Theme that’s causing it

(if it’s using the sliding animation effect eg.@@marquee if the Height dimensions are too large a value it can cause the sub & and info main to disappear when you scroll to the next page)

Which theme is it ?  download link please

Hi Joey... thanks again for your help. Well... actually I've created this theme myself and never uploaded it anywhere. I hope it will be okay for me to paste/share the xml file here. I think you have spotted it regarding the 'sliding animation effect eg.@@marquee'. But I still have no idea which parameters to change.

try this…

<widgetghost valkey=“marquee” x=“38” y=“180” w=“1204” h=“540” ctrlname=“browselist” step=“10”>

p.s. yes it’s ok to post the code

To make life easier… use the “Capture Screenshop” option on the Live SMP to work out the exact co-ords and dimensions

eg. Insert a Flashdrive … then Setup > Operation > Remote Settings > Nominate a Button > Press “OK” and scroll down and you will see “Capture Screenshot”

Screenshot will be saved to the flashdrive … remove and open the image in a image editor to work out the exact x,y,w,h variables.

Below is a pic … the “Dark Area” is where i want the marquee sliding animation to happen (only in the area of the small thumbnails)

In office now, will try once I get home later tonight.

Thanks a lot Joey

I will try this too… Thanks for helping. It benefited me
