Won't Load files larger than 4GB - just freezes

I’ve been using this device for a couple of years. I’ve been having problems loading mp4 movies larger than 4GB. 

When I try:

  • the movie title shows briefly at the bottom of the screen

  • the orange wheel of death spins very briefly then freezes

  • the remote becomes unresponsive

  • the only way I can get it working again is to disconnect/reconnect the power and reboot it

The files play fine on my PC with VLC. They are .mp4 codec AVC (part 10) at 640x480 resolution with a 29.96 frame rate. 

Config:

  • WD Elements drive connected by USB; formatted NTFS

  • latest firmware (didn’t load them on either of the previous two versions either)

Any suggestions??

I don’t think it will have anything to do with file size, I have files over 30 Gb and they work.

More like the way its encoded, at a guess I bet its 10Bit encoded Anime, but could be wrong.

I think it could be the ReFrames (Reference Frames). The file that wont play has a value of 4, and the file that will has a value of 1. I did a google search on this, and I saw a report of problems when the number of ReFrames is 4 or above.

Use Handbrake or VidCoder to re-encode your file (make a copy and re-encode the copy if you don’t want to touch your original) and change the number of reference frames to 3 and see if that works.

There’s no reframe issue as long as the quantity is within the profile spec. All that web stuff that I’ve seen is anywhere from “iffy” to flat-out wrong. :slight_smile:

Also, huge files are no problem, 70 GB (LOTR) works just fine.

I wasn’t aware LOTR was available in BD-XL  ?  :neutral_face:

I thought most (if not all) blu-ray was Dual Layer 50GB for compatabilty with most existing blu-ray players ?

It’s not BD-XL – it’s the “Extended Edition” that spans two disks.

Once ripped, the two files can be concatenated into a single video file.

I didnt know Techflaws combined a 2 disk split into a single 70GB file  (from the brief statement he posted)

But, seriously 70GB for One Movie ?   yeah right :wink:

I thought it was obvious so I didn’t mention it (and I always hated the fact that 3 hour HD movies would not fit on one BD) but Tony is right, I merged both BDs of the extended version without compression keeping both languages. Part 3 amounts to 75 GB and works fine on the WDTV.
