WD TV Live will not work with Onkyo TX-SR706 Receiver at all!

I installed the WD TV Live via HDMI cable into my Onkyo TX-SR706 Receiver. I installed a HDMI cable from the Onkyo HDMI output into the HDMI input of my Vizio model # SV320XVT. I hooked it up to my WiFi and got the latest firmware update. Everything worked great. Great sound, picture and video quality. I then powered down my system with my Logitech Harmony  890. Next day I powered everything back up and the interface looked like a film negative! I went into the Onkyo’s settings for HDMI and tried all of the available settings without any luck. I went into the WD TV Live video settings and tried multiple settings until I stumbled upon one that worked. Everything was back to awesome. Next power cycle got it back to the negative film result. I must keep fumbling around with the WD TV Live video output setting every time I power the three components up. I tried my other WD TV Live unit and it also provided these results. The “faulty” unit worked on my other HDTV. I hooked the “Faulty” unit directly up to the Vizio SV320XVT via HDMI cable. I used an optical toslink to the Onkyo TX-SR706 and switched the audio output in the WD TV Live to the Optical Output Setting. Now I get NO sound from Netflix and Hulu. Some of my video files on my NAS drive have sound, others do not. Some music files have sound, others do not. My Onkyo will only let that optical port be on or off.  Contacted Customer support, they told me to post my problem here.  I really like the WD TV Live. Is there going to be a firmware update or anything else I can do besides returning this device to the store???

Well, it’d be helpful to know what the difference is between the ONKYO’s EDID data and the TV’s EDID data.

Here’s how you can find out.

Start by connecting your WD directly to your TV via HDMI.  Don’t worry about the audio connection; it’s not important at this point.

Insert a supported USB Thumb Drive in the front USB slot.   It’s better if you do NOT have one in the back; that way there will not be any guesswork where the file is going to go.

Navigate to the ABOUT ./ SYSTEM INFO screen in the Setup menu.

When on the screen, press the following key sequence on your remote.

DOWN - DOWN - DOWN - DOWN - RIGHT - DOWN - DOWN

Nothing will appear to happen.

Now eject the drive and plug it into your PC.

You should find a file named “save-edid.bin” saved on the flash drive.

Copy it to your PC in a save place, and delete it from the memory stick.

Now repeat the above procedure when the HDMI cable is plugged into your ONKYO, and your ONKYO is plugged into your TV, and both systems have the INPUTS configured to show the WD on the screen.

Now, open each file in turn with a program called “monitor asset manager” which is available here:

which will convert those files to human readable text.

Paste the output of both results here in the forum.

Not sure if this is useful info or just salt in the wound, but I’ve got the same receiver and a Dynex TV, all connected HDMI and it works without issue.  Sorry to hear about your woes.

I tried to use your directions, however I do not get " You should find a file named “save-edid.bin” saved on the flash drive."  All I get is wdtv.cas2 and another uniondb.cas_009a9c4132e. The “monitor asset manager” does not recognize either file. Am I doing something wrong?

It’s been quite a while since I did that myself, so I’ll need to try it later and see if those steps are still valid.

Yes, it still works. Make sure you are in the ABOUT / DEVICE INFO screen whereit lists the firmware version, part number, and serial number. Mdont click the checkmark until AFTER you do the above key sequence.

Well, the good news is that your Onkyo and the Vizio are BOTH providing the same colorspace data points.

What this indicates to me is that perhaps the Onkyo has a faulty HDMI port.   

You’ve indicated you’ve tried two different WD devices, so it’s unlikely the WD has a hardware issue…

A coupleof things I noticed that might help:

When I setup the Harmony remote with the WDTV, the power off would shut the unit down completely instead of using sleep mode as the WDTV remote does. Turning on again takes a long time and the WDTV has to re-build the media library. I never had problems with the video but they might be related. You can manually program the power off from the wdtv remote using learning mode on the Harmony if this is an issue for you.

With the optical cable, a surprising number of receivers are unable to decode AAC. I had this issue as well (Netflix Hulu Youtube etc…)  I fixed it by going to setup>audio>optical>and UNselecting the AAC setting. This will force stereo PCM out instead of AAC and won’t affect DDsurround/DTS etc… That made everything work again for me.

I want to thank you all for your help. I tried all available HDMI ports on the Onkyo and all provide the less than desirable result. I even tried the port that I have my PS3 hooked up on (which has been fine for years) and that did not work. Thank you vango44, with your suggestion I am now able to get the optical toslink to work with all files, Netflix and Hulu now all have sound!  Thanks again for your help!
