WD Live - MKV files

Hello Forum.

I’ve been having issues with my WD Live (WDBHG700000NBK-01).

I cna’t appear to play mkv files through “Media Share”. I tried running WMP as media share and Divx 10. Both have issues. I will add that both players can actually play the mkv files in question on the PC, they just don’t seem to work on the WD Live when streaming.

Here is info on the mkv file itself.

I am using the lastest firmware as of 2014.08.25.

Can you post a mediainfo output log ?  It contains a lot more information than VLC

It looks “ok”  apart from there not being any writing application or library ?  (all of my mkvs have some sort of data in there)

First thing i would suggest is “remuxing” using mkvmerge (included in mkvtoolnix install)

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVtoolnix

drag and drop into mkmerge (at the top) then click on “start muxing” … it should only take a few minutes for a 1.6gb file (also no quality loss)

try playing the newly created file …

There is no such thing as “Media Share.”

There’s “Network Share” and “Media Server.”

Whatever media server you’re using must support MKV files.

Or, just use Network Shares instead – it doesn’t care what the files are.

You’re right, my mistake. I meant media server. I don’t even know how to get the Network Share to work. I tried yesterday following a youtube video and it got me nowhere. I’m very frustrated with home networking, considering I’m pretty amateur and have limited knowledge on the topic.

I will try the mkvmerger app when I get home.

Thanks for all your help.

Is your problem a networking one. If you copy the MKVs into a folder on your pc, assuming it is windows7 or 8, and then share that folder, by right clicking on it and selecting share with, and then homegroup, you should be able to see it as a network share from the wd tv. It would be even better to get a NAS drive and use that so you do not need to have the pc turned on all the time. You might also need to set your firewall to allow the share to be accessible.

No, it’s not. WDTV does not care about homegroups (some people even claim they interfere with the WDTV). The WDTV must be in the same WORKgroup as the PC.

I tried mkvmerge… no success. I still get the same error.

I also tried sharing the folder and again I can’t see “Network Shares”.

I’ve simply placed all mkv files on a usb portable external hard drive and they work no problem.

unless something changed, since when did WMP (windows media player) support MKV files in it’s server function

traditionally WMP does not support MKV, you’ll need a better media server for that

maybe serviio or something similiar

I am having similar problems and would like to keep this thread moving!

Dg

my point again

I’ve never heard of WMP (Windows Media Player) supporting MKV format as part of it’s media server function

use a different media server

or change to smb

or even better nfs

WMP Doesn’t support MKV out of the box, but if you install something like Shark007 or possibly Haali Media Splitter they should enable that functionality.

I’m currently watching a MakeMKV Blu Ray rip of Get Smart (2008) throught the Windows Media Player DLNA streaming service to the WDTV Live SMP, which I believe is what this thread is about.

ok, yes it is possible to add the functionality through add-ons

but the original post just simple states he’s using WMP as a media server and MKV are not working
