Streaming HD MKV @ Wireless

Hi everybody!

I have WD TV Live conectec via Ethernet cable on my router Huawei 8245, my internet is optical (40Mbits/40Mbits) and is very quick, ping less than 10ms on speed testers. My desktop is a ASUS Sabertooth Z87, 16Gb Coirsair Dominator, ASUS PCE AC68. I can get 4-5MBytes download at torrent programs.

I’m trying to put everything in wireless in my home.

Room 1 (Home Theater)

  • Router Hauwei 8245 (BEL Fibra Copel 40Mbits Down / 40Mbits Up) WIFI 802.11n 4 ethernet
  • Panasonic Plasma VT60 @Wi-Fi
  • Receiver Onkyo @Wi-Fi
  • AppleTV @Wi-Fi
  • WD TV Live @Wi-Fi

Home Office

  • PC Desktop ASUS Sabtertooth Z87 - 16Gb Corsair - ASUS PCE-AC68

I can stream any HD content using AppleTV (MP4), large 10Gb files and bigger has been tested and ok.

I can stream using Panasonic, use Youtube, NetFlix and other without any issues.

I can stream music HI-RES Flac 24/192kHz (large music files) on Onkyo without issues.

But…

I can’t stream large MKV files using WD TV Live @Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable connect direct to my router. Movies bigger than 20Mbits/s have stuttering playback (I don’t know how to call this).

Can anyone help on this?!

Thank you

Ivan Milazzotti

this is all about bandwidth and throughput

netflix and the like typically auto adjust the bandwidth to what’s available

music files are small

for video files it can vary widely between files

also what protocol you use will make a big different

DNLA or NFS will be considerably faster than SMB

“DNLA or NFS will be considerably faster than SMB”

How do I set to NFS? And yes, using DNLA its normal too but I have no subtitles at all, any format, any bitrate. How to fix subtitle using DNLA ?

Thanks

Ivan

DLNA limitations will mostly depend on the server you use

setting up NFS depends on what platform you’re on

any linux distro will natively support NFS

for windows you can look into Hanewin or FreeNFS

then access the content under linux shares on your WD

and yes NFS supports subtitles

Yes, just over 20Mbps bitrate blu-ray sourced movies is about all I was able to achieve with “n” Wifi to a WD SMP (using SMB file sharing).  Sorry, but people are basically being conned by wifi speed claims.  Only Ethernet (wired) connections will guarantee flawless high bitrate file play (with current devices).  If you absolutely must use wifi, then I would suggest reencoding your files to much lower bitrates.  I did this to be able to fit a large number of movies on a 2TB harddrive.  Even 25GB blu-ray files can often be compressed down to like 5GB with still quite high quality settings, so around 1/5 the original blu-ray bitrate.  I chose Handbrake quality settings where I could not distinguish between the source and compressed versions on the ~42" TV they were to be watched on.  Don’t mistake a video being HD/1080 as equivalent to being high bitrate, as it is not.  For HD, Netflix recommends bandwidth be only 5Mbps.  A far cry from blu-ray videos that can be over 40Mbps.

Ive been streaming mkv hd movies via wifi since this box was released.  My router is pretty close to my wdtv though.  I used to use samba which sometimes stuttered with 1080p but 720p worked just fine.  I now use nfs and everything streams perfect via wifi so I would use nfs if your looking for best performace.

But how do i set my WD TV Live or my Desktop Computer to use NFS or something else?

If I use a USB Wireless Adapter I will auto NFS this input?

Thank you

Ivan
