I have misplaced my remote control. Is it possible to use the media player without it? I not, is it possible to purchase only the remote? My sister went to the big box store, that I purchased the device and they told her I would have to buy the whole package, in order to get another remotecontrol.
You need a “Remote Control” to operate the device.
You have a few options without having to “buy the whole package” rubbish the “retailer$” told your sister …
-
Plug in a USB Keyboard
-
Download the (free) WDTV Remote App and use your Android Device as a Remote Control
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wdc.wdremote&hl=en
- Visit the Western Digital Store and get a replacement (under $20 / $30)
*The Live Hub and the SMP use the same Remote Control
- Spend some more time looking for your “misplaced” remote control (look between / behind and under your sofa cushions)
Replacement remote controls are available on eBay:

I like #4 the best. Unless you took your SMP on a trip with you, it somewhere close by.
If you do end up buying a product, depending on how many devices you have, it may be worth looking into a decent universal remote.Nice having one that handles all of my devices (inlcluding SMP) instead of filling up the cofffee table with remotes. Hitting one button to turn on TV/Stereo/SMP is a wonderful thing.

Pearl,
I have thought about getting a universal remote, but I figure it will be “just another remote on my coffee table”!
Anyway, the WDTV is never off, the Roku, never off, the stereo is never off, the cable box and HD radio – same – so I just pick up the remote for the TV, turn it on, select what input to send to TV, and we are in business.
