Movie Folders

Not sure if what im going to ask is by design or not but here I go.

In my collection each movie has its own folder the problem is when I go to go my collection it doesnt show the movide information unless I go into the folder and select the actual file.

Is that normal?

Yes

Metadata doesn’t display for ‘Folders’

However, i discovered a little ‘Trick’

http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Hub-Themes/Folder-Metadata-trick-for-FW2-04-13/td-p/254820

Cheers for the workaround

Im amazed that it cant do this, WD need to sort this otherwise its just a big fail, even the most basic media players can do this.

Will post in ideas section.

I wouldnt bother …

It “used” to Work… but they broke it in a Firmware Update. and has never worked since.

Hardly.  XBMC is the only media software I’ve seen that handles movies-per-folder correctly.  In fact, it’s the only software I’ve seen that darn near REQUIRES all movies to be in their own folder.

And no, the most basic don’t do it, because the most basic don’t support metadata.

But if 1-movie-per-folder is a requirement, yeah, you’re better off finding a different player.

ALL players have specific requirements for file organization.  Some (most?) people are willing to organize their files to fit the player, some aren’t…

What I find disappointing is that a company as large as WD and the resources they have can’t/wont make this feature work and yet an open source group such as XBMC can is nothing short of a huge dissapointment.  WD should be embarrased to make such an half assed product.

This is a basic feature as you dont want your filesystem to look like someone has been sick in a folder with millions of films and meta data and jpg’sall n the same place.

Comparing open source community development to mainstream retail tech is a tired, dead argument.  Not gonna go there.  ;)

The user actually using the media player doesn’t give a rat’s rear end what the back end folder looks like!   Yours is a specious argument.

I only look at the raw folders once in a blue moon.  I don’t give a rat’s rear end that it’s full of other stuff…  Since I actually know what I’m doing, everything in the folder makes perfect sense.  My family never sees it.

For people who aren’t nearly as ana l retentive as you, the file structure is completely manageable.

So you’re definitely better off finding another player that does what you require.   Good luck, and let us know what you find.  Suggest you look at the Boxee Box, since it’s (loosely) based on XBMC…

But I further suggest you do your research FIRST so you don’t go over to some other forum and call their developers half assed just because you don’t like their requirements…

Oh, and BTW, “Fail” is a VERB, not a noun.  ;)

It isnt a tired argument as you put it,  The fact is a large corporation like WD had this feature then took it out because they couldnt make it work, that is what is sloppy and half assed.

The user does care if they have several differnt systems accessing the data, the fact that you dont know ho to have an orginsed file system will cause you no end of problems in the future.

Ana l retentive moi?  You need to get out more going off your post count in just over a year!

After using many different sytems over the years I find it ironic that myself and all other users are having to beta test WD firmware for them.  If you dont believe me look at all the bug reports, there is but a handful of users on here that dont have some issue due to poor firmware.

I have 3 folders on my external usb hdd that I use, 720p, 1080p, and TV, I put my movies in their respectable folder and everything works fine.  I LOVE my SMP, especially after coming from a gen1 wdtv and I don’t even use the streaming feature, I just wanted it for the ‘online’ features that I didn’t have with my gen1

That’s funny.   I have over 25 TB of storage online on my network (and another 10 TB offline.)  I’ve never had a problem with any of my systems.   Sorry…

Sounds like it’s causing YOU more problems than it is me, because I’m enjoying the functionality of my media network while you’re complaining about freakin’ folders!

Well I can’t get the functionality to work so far, but I also do care about my folders.  I access my media from several different devices, so if the WD TV Live requires me to modify my existing file system structure or to adopt a disorganized heirarchy, that will impact other applications and it’s a deal breaker.  The promise of devices like the WD TV Live lies in how well they integrate with an existing topology.  If you’ve got to abandon control to individual devices in order to enjoy their full functionality, that’s a plan for long-term chaos.

Completely agree with you Toddler, the box just isn’t fit for purpose other than basic file playing.

It’s ok for basic consumer use but for anyone else that wants to do anything regarding media libraries it just doesn’t cut it.

Still don’t see a reason to have one folder per movie. It’s redundant and unnecessary.

Maybe , but…for example , if i want movies and tv shows separated in different folder…when i go to Movies folder it shows movies information etc EMPTY, and it look **bleep**, i think is not hard change this stupid things , add a function to put a background/image for folder , like MOVIES folder , TV SHOWS etc

Huh?  That’s exactly how I have my files organized:

Movies

TV Shows

What do you mean, it’s EMPTY?   You can set a JPG for the folder, and have thumbnails, etc.

You may be able to manually set backgrounds and such, but by default those folders are empty, and it is visually unappealing.  I think he means it wouldn’t be difficult for the engineers to provide a default background for these folders or a means for users to specify a default background for those cases.

I’m becoming increasingly frustrated with this device and starting to think XBMC has spoiled me.  I’m looking for a device which can replace my hacked original Xbox, but this ancient hardware running XBMC still surpasses all of these new SMPs in so many ways.

Oh, Ok.  You mean backDROP?   Because my default background shows for all folders.

Yeah , its EMPTY , for example , MOVIE Folder , it show information , date, actors , overview etc , EMPTY , because its not a movie , ita a simply folder , i try change view mode , but this change view mode in all options

How can i set a JPG for MOVIE folder? , i have one , but set automatic by SMP , and this is the cover of my first movie in movie folder

Rename your folder.jpg to folder.metathumb

I rename folder.jpg to  folder.metathumb  and not work , wd take  thumb cover of the first movie on dir
