I have around 32 videos on my WD TV Live streaming media player and its scanning for 14 hours now.
I can't play my videos, What I did is a total reset I formatted the drive and put the movies back on but it's again in a endless scanning mode.
I have the media player for around a month now and there are coming more and more problems.
Edit: I tried it now with a 4GB usb and one movie on it and again endless scanning.

have you tried different USB port on the player?
what's current installed firmware on the player?
have you tried to hold remote for 5-10seconds for full player reset?
have you tried to boot player without storage attached? can player boot fine without storage?
If yes, can you try to turn off the media scan things, before attach the USB storage?
