Can someone tell me why this video won't play?

Hoping someone can shed some light as to why this file is unspported?

Played on a WDBPUF0000NBK WD HD TV Live both 2.02.32 & 2.01.86 firmware, from both network NAS and Local attached storage.

Below is the supported format’s; I am unsure exactly which one it falls under but the resolution and frame rate of the video seems to fit under most categories.

    MPEG2 MP@HL up to 1920x1080p24, 1920x1080i30 or 1280x720p60 resolution.
MPEG4.2 ASP@L5 up to 1280x720p30 resolution and no support for global motion compensation.
    WMV9/VC-1 MP@HL up to 1280x720p60 or 1920x1080p24 resolution. VC-1 AP@L3 up to 1920x1080i30, 1920x1080p24 or 1280x720p60 resolution.
    H.264 BP@L3 up to 720x480p30 or 720x576p25 resolution.
    H.264 MP@L4.1 and HP@4.1 up to 1920x1080p24, 1920x1080i30, or 1280x720p60 resolution.
An audio receiver is required for multi-channel surround sound digital output.
Compressed RGB JPEG formats only and progressive JPEG up to 2048x2048.
    Single layer TIFF files only.
    Uncompressed BMP only.

Kris

Format profile   : High 10@L5.1

Bit depth              : 10 bits

is not supported.       (you will have to re-encode the video to 8 bits )

Thanks Joey,

Now you have pointed it out it makes sense.

Wonder if this will become supportd with a firmware update or could be too hardware intensive.

Kris

No, it won’t be supported because Hi10 requires “Software Decoding” … the WDTV’s use “Hardware Decoding”

Note: “Software Decoding” requires a lot of horsepower (multi cores cpu) … ie. at least a Quad Core for Hi10 1080p

Appreciate your feedback Joey, very informative.

no problem   basically, 10bit (Hi10) is mainly used for “Anime” (Animation / Cartoons) it reduces/ eliminates “color banding”  ie. smooth gradients of colors.

As far as i know, Hollywood don’t shoot the movies in 10bits … only 8bits  (for now i guess ?)

So, anyone who encodes a movie from 8bits to 10bits is achieving nothing

(it won’t magically reduce the color banding … garbage in garbage out … as they say.)

Probably why (apart from the bug in 2.02.32) that the box hasn’t been able to play with ease.

Just unlucky in the copy I picked, but now I am aware I can select a bit more carefully.

Glad I can still happily stand by my WDTV box
