Abnormally warm

I have noticed that the unit is warm to the touch even when powered off.  It gets really warm when in use, which I assume is okay (hopefully).  Is there a problem though that it is warm when powered off?  How much power is it drawing while in that state?  I have only had the unit a few days and I guess I just need some assurance that this will not be a problem.

Is it  “Powered Off” completely ? …  press and hold Remote Power Button  for 5 seconds

if you just press the Remote Power Button for a 1 second … then you’re putting it into “Standby”  (which is using power)

Thank you, Joey. I didn’t realize it was in a standby state. I feel stupid now. I guess I missed that option in the user manual.

no probs vividvibe   The info is on Page 47

These units do run quite warm both while running & in standby.
I have turned my SMP on its side. This allows air to circulate more freely through the inadequate vents on the underside of the unit. I guess I am lucky though because the SMP fits perfectly on the shelf below my TV like this so does not keep falling over.

I never understand why manufacturers are so reluctant to put vents in the sides or top of their units.

Thank you, slip.  I will experiment around with the orientation of the unit.  I keep it in a very open space already, but any trick can help.  I suppose heat will always be the greatest enemy of electronics.

if standing on the side improves the heat issue

you might also try turning the device upside down

vents are on the bottom and heat will go up

so in theory upside down, would be optimal

Get some thick peel and stick rubber feet that will give the unit more airspace underneath. You should be able to find them at you local electronics or Home Depot or on Amazon. I picked up a set of 4 large ones for computer cases from amazon for less than $6US. They were quite large around so just cut one into 4 pieces and mounted on the WDTV corners. Did two boxes this way and they run noticably cooler.

I found these:  http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-4-Inch-Self-Adhesive-Rubber-RUBBERFEET/dp/B00032Q30Q/ref=pd_sim_sbs_misc_2

Exactly right. Cut one of them into 4 wedge shapes and put on the 4 corners of the WDTV.
