5.1 Channel Audit Output

Im planning to buy a WDTV Live SMP WDBGXT0000NBK model.

I have Sony LCD 40EX400 and Sony HTS DAV DZ610.

I plan to connect WDTV with my LCD via HDMI cable and with my HTS via Optical audio cable for sound.

Before buying it, I just want to know if WDTV would b able to play my mp4 or mkv with 5.1 channel audio properly through my HTS or would I get only 2 channel audio.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Does any of those devices support DTS 5.1? If the manuals say yes, then the WD will output as such over HDMI.

On another note, the box says DTS 2.0+Digital out (Bottom). Does it mean 2 channel?

HTS manual says the following:

TV (Audio Return Channel/OPTICAL IN)
Input Stream: Dolby
Digital 5.1ch/DTS 5.1ch/
Linear PCM 2ch
(Sampling Frequency: less
than 48 kHz)

So i guess it supports DTS 5.1 via Optical port.

Thanks for all the help!

Wont it play 5.1 over optical audio cable? Actualky my Tv doesnt support ARC so audio via hdmi aint my option.

It does play 5.1 over optical.

I bought the SMP yesterday.

Having a hard time playing the DTS and DD 5.1 tracks.

None of the video files with DTS audio are being played in DTS. Home theatre doesnt show the sign.

Only one file plays with DD 5.1.

Cant understand why!

Post text output of Mediainfo for the one file that does and another that doesn’t show the sign on your home theatre.

DTS and DD are both working fine now and the sound is discrete and loud.

I had to tick both DTS and DD capability options in sub menus of ‘Audio pass through Optical’ menu. Never knew i can select more than one option there.

Thanks anyway!

Well, I didn’t ask because I’d expected you to have checked this before posting. Anyway, glad it’s working now.

Actually I was ticking just one of these options. Tried once with DD and then with DTS but the things didnt work. Then I read somewhere on this forum that more than one options may also be ticked. I went ahead and tried and it worked just fine.

Friendly advice, … Try the User Manual next time  (highlighted in case you missed it)

Yeah u r right!

Actually, I was so excited and I read so much over these forums already that I thought I knew all the settings.

But anyway, I learnt a lot during this whole process.

Now downloaded and saved the manual for future use.

Another thing: while listening to music, the sound comes from the front two speakers only, for obvious reason that the music I have is 2 channel. But can I somehow get this 2 channel sound from all the front and back speakers? it would be louder in that case, I guess.

For 2 Channel Music to also play through all the other speakers and subwoofer …

sorry … again see the User Manual for your Sony HTS DAV DZ610.

I have a simple Teac Amplifier and it’s  “Emulation” setting plays 2 Channel Audio through 5.1 Speaker Setup.

Your audio reciever must support AAC Decoding. If it doesent … then you will either get No Sound or only 2 Channel Sound at the very least.

Solution: Convert AAC 5.1 to AC3 5.1 using software. eg. PopCorn MKV AudioConverter
