Hi
Since the WDTV Live supports pretty much every file type via DLNA was wondering if its possible to support online video streams for example RTMP.
Im Using Servioo Server and streaming futubox to my WDTV via the server. Be nice to not Transcode on the fly since its HD video and takes a hit on resources with often lag and cut outs. How easy would it be for you to implement it in a firmware update?
Its just that WDTV supports basically any file type and reckon to add two more wouldnt hurt.
1. I am geting old and can't read the xml movie info that appears in the gallery view. Pleas increase the size of it substantially.
2. When we hover over a folder with an xml file in it let it read the movie info, afterall we can press play on teh folder an it plays.
3. Decrease the system menu items like in gallery view you get almost a third of the top screen taken up by the name of the network share or connected media storage and some other junk. Minimise the system stuff.
4. Create a similar view to gallery view that shows rows of movies like when you browse Netflix. A continous line after line of movie covers. When you hover over one, a nice tall section to the right should clearly in big letters describe the movie.
I have tried some custom GUI's but found they are too overly graphic intensive or just plain showing off skills I don't care about. I just want a simply fast interface to browse movies in the best possible way. This is an example of what I am talking about found on another page here at WD.
The problem with this is that the text is too small to read. and it doesn't make use of the full screen.
This is an example of a gallery view similar to what I was pointing out:

Again this mode shows me all the wrong things, and the text info is again too small. But it has made better use of the screen space than the MOCHI default template.
SO please in future revisions could you please make it so the text is large, that the System GUI components are minimised and the main thing I want to see is the Title of the Movie and A description of it it clear writing.
I don't want to mess around with anymore custom attempts. I just want a default UI that doesn't cause me to go blind trying to read movie information.
Also some of those other views you have are really bad in MOCHI, I preferred if you kept the list view that you have as it is quick and sometimes better for searching. But some of the other ones that are a hybrid graphical and list view are simply really bad. WHy not have a list with the name of the movie like in List View, that you can scroll through quickly, but have a panel that shows the movie cover and movie info. A vertical version of the list.
SO those are my suggestions, the default GUI is really bad and needs to be improved!
The default behaviour of this device is to power on when connected to a power supply. This is annoying as the device will start up after a power failure instead of returning to a standby state. With HDMI CEC activated, this also causes my TV and Receiver to power on after a power failure.
Please change the default behaviour to standby when connected to power, or at least provide an option so we can disable auto power on.
Thanks
This little box is so popular. Why can't WD open it up like iphone and let user to write their apps for their WDTV box. let's them write theirs apps and put it on WDTV Apps store to share. If the memory is an issue, make the box be able to use external USB flash disk. People complain about the GUI or lay out, let them do it . People want to have IP-TV functionality, let's them write an Apps for it. If people do not like the standard WDTV pre-loaded Services,Live TV or games, let's them download new Service Apps from WDTV Apps Store. People want more than just English internet Radio, let them create apps for French, Spanish, German or Asian languages. WD should consider to create a USB Game controller for the WDTV box, so that the game could be more interesting. Or create an Apps for iphone or Android Phone to act as a game controller. Imagine to play your Angry bird on 42" TV Screen.
Android base media player box with IPTV functionality is already available in the market.
Use the skip next & last buttons for skipping between MKV-chapters.
I would be very glad if this would be addressed.
Chapters have no use for me if using them means to go through menu hierarchy to chose the one that I want especially because the current chapter hasn't the focus and you must go from top to the desired chapter.
As things are now I rather use the go-to-time feature to skip to the desired time point in the film.
So please make use of the skip buttons (or maybe the "left"/"right" arrow buttons, which have no other function during play back of a video) to skip between chapters.
Would be so fine to see that in the next firmware release. Can it be so difficult?
Is there some reason why in the UK we can't have ITV Net Player, 4 On Demand and 5 On demand services as well as the BBC's iPlayer?????
There must be otherwise what reason would there be that we don't have them?
(should this be addressed to the accountant's department and/or the IT department??)
UK users are being short changed here?
Please can you either do it or tell us why you aren't doing it?
please consider a menu configuration option to run a custom theme from an attached thumbdrive
the configuration option can be as simple as USB1 or USB2
then users could load theme's on the SMP the same way it's done on the HUB and would not be limited to the 30MB limit that can currently be uploaded to the SMP
even the default Mochi theme was 35MB, which is more than what can be uploaded to the SMP
the result is currently all custom themes, must be trimmed down, this restricts what can be done
I suggest remove the limitation, by allowing custom theme's to be loaded from a thumbdrive
You really should allow modified content just like the other two have, people love the ability to show off there new tech even more so if they can modify it a little and make it ultra cool! As it stands your Hub version and the WDLiveTv gen 1/2 are the only ones that allow this if i had known that when i was ordering 3 gen 3's i would of got the earlier models!
Themes are good, but custom movie sheets and less firmware limitation is better why is some the old stuff ALWAYS better thanthen new stuff!!?!
In the community for several years, there is the idea of a Gapless Audio Playback.
http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Streaming-I
And I totally agree with that. Has passed for too long time and I am afraid that eventually we get nothing.
I realize that there are difficulty to remove the pause
between the different kinds of audio files.
If you can not make Gapless playback for all kinds of music files
I suggest limited to files described below.
So, I mean, multitrack lossless files only - FLAC + CUE, APE + CUE, WAV + CUE.
In multitrack lossless files not have a pauses between tracks.
Pause between tracks artificially created after running the CUE file.
I suggest that you run the Cue file, each track individually displayed
and can be played without pauses wholly.
Hi
Imagine for a second that you have a harddrive with 10 movies on it - then you let WD TV download the info and media thumbs for every one of those 10 movies. For every item (movie) it creates a folder (.#movietitle), a metathumb file (#movietitle.metathumb) AND an XML file (#movietitle.xml). That is additional 3 items for every movie - so 10 movies on the drive become 40 items (folders and files) on the drive.
Then lets bulk this up to a 3TB NAS drive with a 1000 movies... That becomes 3000 items (folders and files) in addition to the 1000 movies. As long as you're just accessing this through WD TV there is no big problem.
But try and open your NAS in Explorer on Windows - holy mother of.... That is a BIG BIG mess!!
My suggestion:
Put all extra files and folders downloaded into one single top-folder - call it WDTVINFO for example... That one folder would cover ALL downloaded media info in any folder/sub-folder on our storage device. (Does it make sence??)
An example:
.WDTVINFO()
Movies()
- Cartoon()
- Back to the future.mkv
- Pirates of silicon valley.mkv
- .....
Pictires()
- Trip to Paris()
- .....
Series()
- Big Bang Theory()
- Season 1()
- Episode 1.mkv
- Episode 2.mkv
- ....
- Season 2()
- ....
- ....
That way you keep a sleek looking overview when accessing the NAS or harddrive from Windows, MAC or Linux...
Hope you (WD) will make this as it will help a lot in overview of folders...
Best regards
Dear WD,
You have many customers in the Nordic countrys. I have two WDTV SMP and are considering throwing them away for the Samsung Homesync only for this reason:
I want from the same box stream my local content (WD TV got it!) and use Netflix (WD TV got it!) and minimum the other big providers in the Nordic countries:
- Viaplay
- HBO Nordic
You should also support from Norway:
- NRK (Free online, shouldnt be difficoult)
- TV2 Sumo (Many solutions already on the market)
I suppose Swedish and Danish customers have simmilar demands. When the Samsung Homesync gets out we`ll get all this via Android market. There are also Mini PCs avaible that are strong enaugh to stream Silverlight and Flash (Zbox) and local HD content. (Atom only did local HD content). Please give me a reason to stay with you?
Hi,
I'd like to request an option in the settings to change the default behaviour of the power button.
The possible selections might be:
Having the device going to stand-by (which consumes around 5W, depending on possibly attached USB devices) by default is actually the opposite of what the user wants.
I've never had a talk to any WDTV HD Live user who'd want the device to stay in such a stand-by mode. Plus, it is not quite a "green" approach for such a device. (considering as well that EU law forbids such high power consumptions during stand-by)
Allowing the user to change the power button to switch the device off completely would also help the users who are controlling the unit with a universal remote, as many manufacturers only allow for a single key press)
I'd appreciate if WD would consider such an option.
Thank you,
Chris
I just switched from a competing product (Popcorn C-200) to WD TV Live Streaming and the feature I miss most is being able to use the number keys on the remote to jump into fixed percentage positions of a video(/audio). I.e. pressing 1 will jump to the first 10% of the movie, pressing 5 will jump to 50% of the movie , pressing 0 will jump to the very beginning of the movie etc. Right now the number keys are not used for anything on the remote so this feature would fit in well. Also the existing features on the remote to jump forward/backward in a video is not very easy to use.
When watching movies locally/network it would be nice to be able to skip backwards/forwards instantly. My Samsung TV has this feature and they implemented it by skipping 10 seconds backwards or forwards when pressing the left or right arrows respectively. Currently the arrow buttons don’t seem to have any existing functionality when watching something so it seems like they are available. So if you could please consider a 10 second (configurable?) skip.
Thanks!
A complete web interface that allows browsing of the media library as well as controlling the device.
I use my WDTV for steaming music during the day and as such don't want to have a huge TV switched on all day, besides which I'm often not in the same room. The ability to remotely control the unit from a networked computer anywhere in the house would be a massive improvement - I wouldn't need to keep switching the telly on and standing in the front room while I selected the playlists...
At the moment the web control is a lame picture of the physical remote control, but if you can't physically see the connected TV this is pretty useless.
(Would also me nice if a folder with only playlists showed up in the media library or under the music section)
Delete section "Live TV" from the main screen, and move it into the category of "Services".
I see that a lot of application for english audition or other nation are yet implemented, but Italian application are very very few.
It would be a great idea to implement the application of rai.tv. Rai is the itaian public service broadcasting and is visible on net on the url http://www.rai.tv/dl/RaiTV/dirette_tv.html
Thanks for your attention
I think if hovering over a folder in this view, then the folder.jpg should be displayed on the right hand side of the screen
See attached screen shots

Suggested look:
At the beginnig of a video the wdtv displays audio and subtitle in the left uper corner. The subtitle shows the language of the subtitle but the audio only shows its format like DTS oder AC3. I thini this Information isn´t as important as the language of audiostream played. could you change the display of audio format to audio language?
Sometimes I watch a movie for 4 minutes until someone starts to speak in it in french which I don´t understand. I have to change the language, go back in time and try again.
