Add Remote Control POWER key Function to Operation menu

Status: Unplanned

I have now purchased 3x WD TV Live Streaming Media Players (WDTVLSMP) for family & friends. Without exception, all express their concern about the current non-standard method of WDTVLSMP switch-off compared to other household consumer devices such as TV’s, DVD’s & BluRay players etc.  They cannot get used to the WD remote control requirement to ‘press & hold’ POWER key for five seconds to turn off the WDTVLSMP. More times than not, they forget about ‘press & hold’….

I propose the following solution; add a remote control POWER setting to the Setup > Operation menu where a single short press (current suspend function) of remote control POWER key can be defined as follows:

- Active Standby   (Suspends the device into sleep mode & turns off the video output)
- Off                      (Media Player AND connected USB HDD shutdown)

Out-of-box factory default should be ‘Off’

Unfortunately, this is a security requirement to support some of the premium online services. If user would like to install modified firmware, these premium online services will not function properly.

Hi Jchen, Is your response on the correct thread I can't see the relationship between having a dedicated power setting in the official firmware and your reference to modified firmware.

Yes, I agree with Adslp. This can not be right that a complete PowerOff can be a security requirement.

If there should be no option for the Power-Button, I would propose the opposite behavior. A short press shuts down completely, as most users would expect.

If someone want to use it as NAS or the fast power up from standby (by the way the (short press) standby consumes 5W, the same as the player would be powered on), then a longer press on the power button would be the better one.

Hi folks, the behavior as it is now is nonsense, sorry. Reconsider this !!!!! Into the bargain, since V1.07.15 now the reaction is much more slower.

how about seperating these "services" so they dont link in so much with the system, so modded firmware doesnt affect it... basically im saying, let mod'ers write services, if they cant go under the services menu, create a new "plugins" area

The current operation is simply wrong. I think WD response "Unfortunately, this is a security requirement to support some of the premium online services. If user would like to install modified firmware, these premium online services will not function properly" is a bit lame and they have marked this as unplanned.

If that is the case then the least WD could do is change the LED function - WD take a leaf out of Nokia's book - My old Nokia would slowly cycle the LED on / off about every 10 seconds. What was nice was that it faded the LED up then down so that it was not too obtrusive. So at least cycle the LED slowly when in standby (short press)

I PM jchen, asking him to review the thread and his reply.

As others have said: "there is no relationship between having a dedicated power setting in the official firmware and his reference to modified firmware".

To me, it looks like he replied to the wrong thread.

I don't like this either, the WDTV is on standby, like modern TVs. This allows it to maintain the file server running. A full shutdown would require a full startup, which takes very long if you have a large drive with many files.
