None of my mkv files will play

Just picked up the newest WD TV Live with Newest Firmware installed. All my mkv files play fine on my computer but will not play on the WD TV Live. All files have no compression and are a complete copy of the original bluray using the newest DVDFAB 8QT. I tried to remux using mkvmerge to see if it was a DVDFAB issue but still nothing changed. The movies start to play have sound for about 20 seconds then goes away but the picture is still there for about 15 sec then everything stops and it says that the format is no good. Reboot to factory settings and the same thing happens again. I am at a loss and I am about ready after spending 3 days copying all of my blurays to take back the player and just give up on the ordeal. Do I need to go back on the firmware? I have other downloaded movies in mkv format that are doing the same thing. Please help!

You say you’re ripping your collection, but it’s obvious you’re pirating… The media info even says you’re copying a rented Bluray…

The first one is a purchase from Blockbuster (A prior rental bluray). Technicaly any bluray backup is a DMCA violation so they all are pirated if you want to say that. Either way here is another one that I own that has the issue the same.

That’s not true.  First-Sale doctrine allows for the purchaser of a DVD or BluRay to do anything they want for their own purposes.

It sounds like, in your case, Blockbuster violated law by selling to a consumer a Bluray that was explicitly licensed for RENTAL ONLY.  My appologies for the accusation … I wouldn’t have thought BB would sell RENTAL-ONLY media.

At any rate, it sounds like the WD isn’t able to keep up with the bandwidth requirement for the full bitrate media you have.

Are you using WIRED network or WIRELESS?   If the latter, there’s very little chance of a WiFi network being able to stream full bitrate 1080p content…

Tony, I think you will find that it depends on where yo live. I don’t believe that it is legal in the UK to copy any DVD / Bluray. Also Blockbuster in the UK do sell their old rentals after use. I have a number which say rental on them.

Good points, Rich…

He mentioned DMCA, which usually is referring to the US law, so I assumed he was in the US…  My understanding is that other countries have similar laws, but name them something different like the EUCD, which is the European Union “equivalent” to the US’s DMCA, or in general, the “WIPO” treaties.

Yeah, I know that BB sells older media, but as far as I know, they are not allowed to sell the ones that are licensed as RENTAL ONLY (which the above, being embedded in the VOLUME ID of the disk shows that it is.)   It IS legal in the US (under FIrst Sale doctrine) for BlockBuster to sell rental media that is actually the RETAIL version.

I don’t know what percentage of manufactured DVDs / Blurays these days have both Retail and Rental variants…  They ARE allowed to sell RETAIL versions that were used as RENTALS, but not the other way around.

The funny thing is it says rental only on the BluRay but I purchased it with 4 other BluRays in a package deal. I thought you couldnt copy your own dvd or bluray becasue of having to break the copywrite encription but I guess I was wrong. Anyway to answer the question, no all are played direct from usb drives. I have a 3TB WD Mybook Essential and a 16GB Patriot Thumbdrive that I have tried them on and got the same thing. The xVid files I have play fine with no issues. I just dont understand it at all. Still learning all the video specs and thought mkv was the best way to go as far as best audio and video quality but it is turning out to be a nightmare.

The laws are weird, but they tend to protect the CONSUMER in many cases.

Note:  I’m not a lawyer, and this should not be considered to be legal advise.   Note also that this may be considered a violation of WD’s Community Terms of Service, because this is NOT a legal venue.  So if this post disappears, well … that’s up to WD.

It is illegal in the US to SELL software or hardware that defeats the copy protection mechanisms on DVD and Blu-ray.

But it is NOT illegal to BUY such software, to POSESS such software, or to USE such software on media that you legally own.

Since you’re using DVD Fab, try this:

Use DVDFab to rip the Bluray to FOLDER structure.

Use the freeware program TSMuxerGUI to pull out the Main Movie feature into its own M2TS file.

Just play the M2TS file and don’t try to convert to MKV.

Of course the clueless industry keeps trying but how will they ever enforce this?

Right now their best hope is Cinavia.
