No mkv files will play that are 1080p. why?

Hi ive got the gen 1 WD HD Media Player.  I have tried loads of 1080p mkv files from H264 to mkv e.t.c.

This is the most recent file i have tried that i have brought up in mediainfo, could someone spot why this wont play on the media player.  The codec is supported, the audio is supported.  Im loosing the will to live with this box unforunately so far WD media players are a load of rubbish. People say that it will play prity much any file yet when i come to do so 1 out of 17! mkv files from differant sourses dont play get the horrible message of file format not supported chck the manual.  So checked and it is exactely what is supposed to be supported.

Or from this point out what i need to look for and what needs converting.  I used the software provided with the player for converting but due to my older laptop it would take a week just to convert 1!

Thanks

Is it mkv’s or avi that will not play. What software did you get with the player. How were they made into mkv.

They were “cough” downloaded already like that. Well they are all mkv files but this seems to be a avi file for some reason.  But my issue is that any 1080p mkv wont play.  Only 720p.  even if i was to convert them it would take a week for 1 with my spec pc.  but i downloaded x264 ones, dont work mkv dont work mp4 dont work at 1080 only 720p.  The purpose of me buying it was for 1080p.

Thanks

From the info above what would i need to look for to ensure it would work?

Thanks

So basically these are pirate movies and you did not use any software supplied to make them. If you want help its best not to fib about the problem.

MKV is just a container and not a codec so it can have many video and audio formats within it such as your avi. The WD player plays standardized files because it is a hardware device and unfortunately some pirate videos are encoded in a non-standard format that the WD player does not like.

have you tried to re-encode them?   run your “borrowed” mkv through handbrake with new settings, ( maybe high profile?)

just saying, if they are valid mkv’s you might be able to “fix” them.

hope it helps.

Thanks guys wel i do have handbreak but due to the spec of my computer a 9gb 1080p mkv if set off within 1hr id be at 2% completion and the laptop is buringing up lol.  Need to look into investing on a mechine that can handle the demand e.g i5 prosessor 8gb ram lol.  But making a gaming pc soon so will get good spec

You could also try running them through mkvmerge. It might make them into a better mkv and it only takes a few minutes.

Won’t they run at all, or are they just not running smoothly?

I’ve had issues myself where they didn’t run smoothly. This has been a mix of network problems (Router sometimes decide that link to another router only supports 10MB/s) and another have been that the server that contained the files suddently were overloaded.

Have you tried putting one of the files on a usb stick and feeding it directly into the WDTV?

The WD TV Live is by far the best media player I have tested. It can handle pretty much any file format and has no problems with 1080p movies, not even 1080p 3D movies.

Keep in mind that to be able to play 1080p over the network you need to make sure that you are using wired gigabit Ethernet (wireless _could_ work) and have a server that can handle high read speeds.

I have not been able to stream the 1080p 3D movies successfully over the network so I have to copy them to a locally attached USB drive.
