Problem Displaying WD TV Media Player on a VGA/DVI Monitor (HDMI to VGA?)

Hi Guys,

I’m trying to display my WD TV Media Player on a LCD monitor which only has a VGA input. Have tried a HDMI to VGA cable but no signal is detected?

What kind of cable is that?    HDMI and VGA are apples and oranges; there’s no such thing as an HDMI to VGA cable that I’ve ever seen.

HDMI to DVI, yes, because those are both digital formats.

VGA is ANALOG, so there has to be some sort of active converter between the two to do that.

You would need a HDMI to VGA converter such as the HDFury. I briefly used one with a projector, and it looks good until you directly compare it with a pure component or HDMI output.

If you did get a monitor with a DVI input then you could just use a direct DVI to HDMI cable since HDMi is backwardly compatible with DVI.

Thanks guys, this is the cable i got off ebay >>>

Also i looked at HDFury seemed a bit pricey £50-60 on amazon O_o >>>

This will work with VGA ports that offer or accept a digital signal not an analog one.  I personally have never seen a VGA port that accepts or provides a digital signal.

Is your DVI enable monitor DVI-I or DVI-A or DVI-D?  So you wil not waste your time buying another cable that you can not use.  I would assume that you monitor is at least DVI-D.  Make sure to get an HDMI cable to DVI-D.  DVI cables can carry digital, analog and digital + analog signals depending on number of pins on DVI and what your monitor is capable of.

I bought this HDMI to DVI cable from ebay:

It’s a flexible Belkin cable that Apple also sell (this is approx half RRP). I use this for an old NEC projector and the picture looks fantastic.

Or, the same place also sells: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Belkin-Pure-AV-DVI-HDMI-Cable-1080p-HD-/320505886634?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item4a9fa3b7aa

This is a cheaper Belkin cable (with more shielding, though) but not as flexible.

Basically, I like Belkin cables but it may be overkill for your situation. The £3 one will probably do the job just as well.
