My WDTV seems to play most files flawlessly, but one particular MKV seems to cause stuttering and further issues, including playback delays with other files (until restart). Resetting the device does not solve the issue, nor does restoring factory settings. I have attempted to manually adjust the video output resolution to no effect.
The firmware is version 1.0.8.17. I have rollbacked to version 1.0.7.18 to no avail.

Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated. I copied this file from a friend and it would be useful to know whether his encoding options are incompatible so they can be avoided in future. If the problem is firmware or even hardware, that would also be useful to know so it can be dealt with appropriately.
Many thanks for your time.
EDIT:
I tried a second encode and the same problem occurs:
