I know this sounds silly but, are you pressing the “Subtitle” or “Option” button during the “Playback” of the Movie ?
(if you’re Not currently “Playing” the movie the “Subtitle” button won’t do anything … and the “Options” won’t list “Subtiltle”)
if it’s still no go, check the contents of the .srt file (open it in Notepad to check the contents)
P.S. Does your WDTV player look like this ?
