CANNOT PLAY AVI AND WMV FILES

Very dissapointed to see that it does not play all kind of avi and wmv files. The primary reason i brought  wdtv was to play all my avi and wmv files on tv and this does not work.

Will there be any fix to resolve this issue.? Any firmware updates etc?

Re: CANNOT PLAY AVI AND WMV FILES

The current WDTV spec only supports WMV 9 files. This is an older codec. I believe that WMV is now up to version 11 or 12. If you ripped the videos in any format than WMV 9, they will not play. It should also be noted that almost all media players only support the WMV 9 codec. Hopefully, WD will fix this in the future.

If you can get MP4 video files, the WDTV will be fine.

I don't know about AVI files.

Re: CANNOT PLAY AVI AND WMV FILES

AVI is a container which can hold a lot of codecs which you can check out with Mediainfo. My AVIs play just fine so I don't see any reason to ever encode to Microsoft's crappy WMV.

Don't believe everything that your PC tells you. Do you know what an X3 player is? I would not trust any file which needs an dubious piece of software to work. The issue is with your files and not with the WDTV.

Re: CANNOT PLAY AVI AND WMV FILES

You can use mediainfo to look at info in your files and see what codecs they use etc. This gives more info when reporting files that don't play on the WDTV.

http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

As has been pointed out only a particular wmv plays on the WDTV. As to avi's, it all depends on what they contain. There are a huge number of freeware programs which can easily convert unplayable types to someting the unit does play.

I think you are confusing  WMV with the WMP player.  WMV 9 is the latest container with WMP media player now up to version 12 with Windows 7.

What I meant about the x3 player is that I can't find the player on the internet only references to it. Are these torrent files that you trying to play, it appears that they mostly ask for this 'player'. Be warned that this x3 player or codec could in fact be a virus.
