-reset factory settings
-set timezone to US
-disconnect network
-install firmware from USB
I am curious to know if somebody can share some lights on how the geographic location is determined in the situation above.

Its likely that services are not shown until the internet location is confirmed and not the other way round.

Hi Rick, thanks for confirming the suspect about geolocatization detection sequence.
I could enable Netflix and other US streaming services on my american WD TV LIve hub using latest firmware with unblock-us by following this procedure:
1) Update firmware using either automatic download servide or by USB
2)Unplug unit from internet ! Very important
2) Reset to factory settings by Setup -> System -> Device Reset -> All Settings Back to Factory Default
3) Manually provide IP configuration (address, netmask, gateway) and unblock DNS
4) Plug unit to internet and check internet configuration
5) Voila! You should be able to see a new Label 'Live TV' (which contains Skitter.tv) + all US-based services

Hi Fred.
I tried to follow the steps you listed and even though I did as you described I still do not have access to Netflix and the other US-only apps.
So I guess it's back to the good old firmware again.
Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Kasper.

Kasper, I am sorry to read that technique didn't work for you. Just my 2 cents:
-did you check that unblock-us service was available to your network and WD unit never connected to internet using your default DNS?
Before applying the technique above, I discovered that it's possible to preserve Netflix (and other US service apps) across firmware upgrade. It was sufficient to mark it as 'favourite' when running with old firmware. After the upgrade, the app will be still accessible from favourite menu although it's not listed into Services menu.
Hope this helps!

Hi again Fred.
I am so happy to tell you that I did get Netflix and the other American apps to show up on the new firmware :-)
I simply installed the old firmware again and then followed the steps you mentioned, paying extra attention to when I should unplug the ethernet cable (RIGHT AFTER the new firmware is downloaded and BEFORE it installs). At least that is what I think made the difference.
I guess an advice for people experiencing the same problem would be to download the new firmware onto a usb-stick, unplug the ethernet cable from the Hub while installing from the stick and plugging it back in after having set up network settings manually.
Thank you so much for this fix. Tonight I am going to really enjoy watching Netflix on my Hub again!
Kasper.
