Support for AC3

I got a lot of files with AC3 sound, The Live Hub does not support this, is this an idea for the next firmware update, is this possible anyway? thanx for your support!

Of course it supports AC3 sound. What do you mean ?

Audio - MP3, WAV/PCM/LPCM, WMA, AAC, FLAC, MKA, AIF/AIFF, OGG, Dolby Digital, DTS

Dolby Digital is AC3.

Remember AC3 can be 2.0 and not 5.1 as well. Look on the back of your DVD Case.

All files I have are downloaded from the internet and what you think about this:

Direct from WD Support: “unfortunately the AC-3 sound codec is not supported on the WD TV Live Hub Media Server”

But I play it fine on my end. Note it is going through a receiver too.

@surfinjohn

Get this

http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en Mediainfo

And paste the details of  a file thats not working.

I assure you AC3 works.

My receiver can only playing Stereo with this file

What have you got your audio set at

Go to Settings /Audio/Video Output/ Audio output

And change it from Stereo to whatever setup you have

settings are Optical and not Stereo, I forgot to tell that DTS (in other files) is working perfectly, by the way the Dutch helpdesk told me that AC3 is not working on the Live Hub!

and what is the difference between AC3 and Dolby Digital?

I am just watching this now, and it comes up as Dolby Digital on the little OSD, and I can hear it in all my speakers.

And Dolby Digital is AC3…I dont know what the problem could be tbh…

Can I get somewhere this file that you used for testing?

Thanx a lot for your help!

No. But there are sample files here

http://www.tfm.ro/win32-projects/test-avi-ac3/

http://www.diatonis.com/downloads_dts_ac3.html

Thanx, tomorrow I do the test if its not working, I try it again with the receiver of my brother.

Ok, Yeah seems strange, if you can get DTS, then surely you can get AC3.

I take it you hav it set to DTS passthrough, try dolby digital and see what that does.

And does it give an error when it does not play ?

As wdtvhub said, the HUB will play AC-3 audio and your reciever should matter either, since I don’t think that they make a reciever that will not decode AC-3, unless you have something that is really, really old.  I have cheap  20 yr. old RCA reciever that will decode AC-3, so it should have anything to do with your reciever.

Here’s a question though, are your files that you are trying to play on the HUB’s drive or on your PC?

Are you streaming the files from a media server (Windows Media Player or something similar)?

My reveiver is 8 years old en it played very well AC3 with an other mediaplayer, the files are on the harddisk of the Hub.

I just tested 2 files:

Test AC3 v2.0.avi: only stereo

diatonis_invisible_order_anfos_ac3.wav: beautiful Dolby Digital sound!!!

When playing I get no errors by the way.

I shame myself, on the Live Hub the setting passtrough was only DTS!!!

now I did the same with Dolby Digital and now it works!!!

sorry!!!

thanks everyone for your help!!!

Well I dont understand this.

Apart from it has to be your setup…somehow.

Just tried Test AC3 v2.0.avi : Dolby Digital and it went round all my speakers doing the test.
