Windows Shares

I recently purchased a WDTV Live.  I am running Windows 7 on my home PC.  It is all hard wired with gigabit ethernet and switches.  The WDTV Live connects to the network and internet just fine.  However, I cannot figure out how to stream my movie and tv collection to the WDTV.  I have shared the folders according to the manual and allowed access to everyone with read and write permissions.  I set my network location to “Work”.   My typical folder structure is below:

HTPC1/Movies/Movie Name(Year)/Movie Name.mkv (other metadata and banners and such are also here)

HTPC1/TV Series/TVName/Season1/TVName - 1x01 - Pilot

My first issue which is hit or miss is the fact that I cannot always see the two folders that i shared, Movies and TV Series.  If and when they actually show up, WDTV is telling me there is no media in the current folder.

Do I have to share every single sub folder within Movie and TV Series?

If I go to options and try to add the folder to my media library it says the source is set to Read-Only, which it is not as I gave all users the ability to read and change the folder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try a media server, like Plex for windows

Thank you for the suggestion of going to a plex media server, I am just not convinced that I should limit myself to a plex based media streaming system.  I’m seriously considering returning the WDTV live and going with a nettop box like the  http://www.amazon.com/Foxconn-NTA350-0H0W-B-A-NA-Hudson-Booksize-Barebone/dp/B00556F8BU/ref=zg_bs_3015426011_5

I feel like I have to be missing something simple but I hitting my head against the wall trying to figure this out.  Please help.  Thanks.
