No writable partitions found

I have a “my book essential”. It has been packed away for a year and now my laptop running windows 8 is not able to detect **bleep**. It does start up and vibrates. The subject line is the message I am getting.

I am not very pc literate, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for you time.

Welcome to the Community.

This error message seems to be related to WD SmartWare as opposed to the WD My Book Essential itself. This message is the result of the application being unable to properly use your hard drive because it is not detected, it’s locked, or needs to be formatted/partitioned.

I would recommend ensuring you can see the actual WD My Book in the Computer section of Windows Explorer. If you can then try to manually copy a file into it. If it accepts the file then the next step would be to uninstall WD SmartWare and install an updated version from the following link:

If that does not work then you may have to format (Erase) your hard drive:

Regards,

Did you get this to work.  I had exactly the same problem on same os but then it suddenly started working after a couple of restarts.  Support suggested not all the relevant software had been installed or something even though I allowed it to do everything it wanted to install.
