Have to reinstall SmartWare after disconnecting MyBook from laptop

New MyBook user here…

The drive has been great and easy to use, but I’m having one recurring problem.  I have it connected to a laptop, so I frequently disconnect it (safely, of course).  After I’ve been disconnected from the HD for a while, when I reconnect, it won’t do auto backup.  I also can retrieve anything.  In fact, it’s as if it was never connected at all.

To get it working correctly again, I have to uninstall WD SmartWare and re-install it from scratch.  Needless to say, it’s a bit of an annoyance.  Am I doing something wrong or is there a known issue here?

I also have  similar  problem.  I cleaned up icons from desktop which apparently deleted the program entirely.  since then, when I attach the backup device via usb, the laptop recognizes the item as a new connection but all I get is the shape of the programs that I recall from the original set-up, but no actual words on the screen or directions for me to reinstall the device…is it useless?  It is not backing anything up!  I am going in circles.
