WHEN IS WDFME.exe GOING TO GET FIXED?

OK, it’s me again.  What they did NOT tell me from India was that you need to completely UNINSTALL WD Smartware using your control panel before doing the update.  This is one of those “Updates” that does not update, but is a complete replacement for the existing version of Smartware.  After three attempts to update and three days of testing, the problem still existed.  I uninstalled all traces of Smartware and then ran the downloaded update installer package from WD and now successfully have Smartware Version 3.1.5.9 installed and working successfully on my Windows 7, SP1 computer with 8 GB RAM.  By the way, WD is apparently aware of this issue, but trying to keep it quiet as I got  a PRIVATE MESSAGE from Level 2 Tech Support as a result of this public post in this community.   Funniest thing about that is that if I didn’t log back in here today to post a follow up to my post, i NEVER WOULD HAVE KNOWN.  I was not sent an email or anything telling me level 2 tech was trying to get in touch with me.  ha ha.  Good Luck everyone.

Does it not seem odd the lengths they are making us go to to fix their problem???..

Any response WD???

Probably never.

I  am running 1.5.1.6 ( because i could not install  the version the folks at WD are advertising). That is different thread  with many mails in it.

Anyway, It is a CPU Hog and only way I can run my computer if I kill Whiteface.

What a way to live after paying 179 dollars… and in the year 2012.

I guess the folks at WD are still at horse and buggy days.

Thanks,

Sankar

I too have seen this issue with the WDFME.EXE file, I have disabled it in my windows services. So it seems like there are issues with this application.

Does anyone know what this application actually does?

I found out that WDFME.EXE is the background automatic file scanning device for the WD automatic file backup system.  It constantly scans your entire hard drive in real time looking for file changes to automatically backup if you have it set that  way.  When I was having issues, it was using 98% of my 7.97 GB of RAM.  Now that I completely uninstalled the WD SmartWare software from my computer, ran C Cleaner.exe registry cleaner, ONLY THEN did the WD  Smartware update, everything works fine and my computer is only using 31% of available RAM.  Level II tech contacted me by phone and I told him everything.  I also told him about so many people posting in forums all across the net talking about this same issue.  He explained that there is a disconnect in WD that the engineers who could explain the fixes are not able to post to forums and that the WD community on this website is ONLY for customers to post, NOT WD employees.  Ha Ha.  So THAT is why they never respond, they can’t!  I told him how this is giving them a “black eye” and that they are going to lose a lot of sales if they don’t get out in front of this.  He said he will mention all of this to his  superiors.   Since I had already fixed my own problem, they wanted me to take a snapshot of my system and send to them for engineer analysis so they could try to replicate the exact issue I was having.  Each computer is like a snowflake, many are similar, but none are the same.  Each person customizes them differently by settings and installed software.  This makes it difficult for WD to apply one fix across the board, but they definitely should NEVER ALLOW the firmware update to be made to the Passport without first having the software updated.  Also, the software should automatically detect a previous version of itself and uninstall then update all by itself.

I had the same problem. The fix was to delete the software that came with the passport and do a new update which is actually a new program. Just doing a update did not work. Had to delete first. Now when I start the computer it runs full out for 10 minutes or so using 100% of cpu but and then it quits. Before it would run for hours. Hope it conitues to work this way.

Can’t WD figure out a way to add a “stop” button to their WD Smartware.  A “background program” does not need to use over 50% of system resources… at that rate, it’s definitely FOREGROUND no matter what you try to cal it.

Simply stopping the backup does not free-up any CPU or memory, what is needed is a way to stop the software from running when you don’t want it.  Why not enable users to stop the software when they need to use their computer and then start the software when they want to resume real-time backup?

Would this be so hard?

Oops… just got another High CPU Usage warning for WD Smartware Engine… and I am not even running a backup now!!!

This is ridiculous.

Brooster,

Use Task Manager(ctrl, alt, and del all at the same time) to get in there and look at the processes running.  Click “Show processes from all users”  at the bottom of Task Manager.   That will bring up the real time usage list.  There, you should see a process using waaaaaay more than anything else.  WDFME.EXE was using over 70 million bytes on mine.  Stuck out like a sore thumb.  Highlight that process and then click “End Process”.  You see, this software is constantly running and monitoring your entire hard drive for file changes to automatically backup.  That is why it  is running even when you are  not backing up.  Go to WD website and download the latest version of software for your product.  Download it to where you can find it again.  Uninstall the WD Smartware software from your Control Panel.  This will completely remove it from your system.  Next, if you have a registry cleaner tool(download CCleaner.exe from Cnet.com), run it to get rid of any left over junk the uninstall left behind.  Now, you can open your downloaded update and let it self install.  You should be good after that.  These are the steps I took and it’s been working perfect ever since.  Never goes over 25% useage now.

Yes you have to delete the old program first to make the new update work properly. I also unchecked it in startup so it would not start when the computer starts up. Workinf great so far

This software is still a piece of **bleep**.

(1) I uninstalled the software, using Add/Remove Programs

(2) Rebooted computer

(3) Ran latest version of CCleaner

(4) Rebooted computer

(5) Installed latest version of WDIdiotWare

(6) Rebooted computer

(7) Selected “file backup”, and selected the files/folders I wanted to backup. Note: I did NOT check the “start backup” button

WDFME.exe continues to consume my entire CPU. Why?? The backup isn’t even started?

Followed the steps provided below by Western Digital Service and Support and seems to be working adequately so far. Keeping fingers crossed against memory leakage/creep.

Note that I was already using the latest versions of the WD firmware, the WD software, and Windows.NET, so perhaps uninstalling and reinstalling was the trick in my case.  I hope so.

Be aware that anti-virus and anti-spyware should be turned off first.  In your case, you might try their method of checking that Java, Flash, and .NET are current, then updating firmware, then uninstall/reinstall latest WD software.   Good luck.

The last portion (Step 4, regarding the stopping and restarting of WD services may also be crucial).  I went through the whole thing, just as they laid it out… and so far, so good.

Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support…

Does that not seem a little bit ridiculous to you that they make you do all of that to make [deleted] software work.  I’ve been on a mission to send as many people away from WD drives as I can until they sort it out, not you, not me, THEY…

I have the same problem with WDFME.EXE. It slows my laptop down to the point of being annoying when I’m pugged into my docking station at work (30 second delays sometimes) but it makes my laptop practically unusable when I’m travelling. I’m talking about my programs taking minutes to respond to commands. I think it is because WDFME.EXE is searching for and attempting to back up files to a drive that it isn’t there when I’m travelling. It took me awhile to figure out that WDFME.EXE was causing the problem but I’m glad I finally did. I am able to kill WDFME.EXE from the Windows Task Manager and my system performance immediately improves but of course this defeats the purpose of having the backup software in the first place. I have resorted to just manually restarting the backup software before I go home each night. This works but since I’m not continually backing things up I run the risk of losing files I worked on each day before the backup starts. It seems like there has to be a way to make the backup software do it’s job without gobbling up all the system resources. Has anyone figured out a way of making this work short of switching to some other backup software?

See my lengthy reply above.

Western Digital Service and Support did provide some steps—many steps—to correctly install the firmware and the software.  It’s a pain to have to go through the whole procedure, but it seems to work.  I haven’t had a problem the couple of days since following their reinstallation procedure.

Agreed that it would have been better to be given the proper installation sequence upon initial installation and  AT THE TIME the updates were offered.  But I cannot afford a new drive at this point and I’m a heavy computer user… so I bit the bullet and reinstalled everything per WD instructions.  Satisfied thus far.

And even if it takes a couple of hours it’s worth the time when you can run backup AND use your computer at the same time.

I had this problem on my netbook. I took a look at other programs installed which might interact with this in the background .

I uninstalled Vodaphone mobile connect (as the program is on the datastick anyway) and now have no problem

Edit forget this was OK for 2 days then came back!!!

SmartWare 1.6.0 is now live on our website and is available for downloading.  This should resolve the high memory issues seen that were posted in this thread.

At last!

I’ve been waiting for a long time for this memory hog issue to be fixed.

Having installed Version 1.6.0 … now all seems to be working perfectly.

Spoke too soon.

After logging out as one user and logging in as another user, the WDBackUpManager started running at 50% of CPU and continued to do so … and continued to do so…and continued to do so…even after all files were backed up and even after stopping the backup.

has this been fixed yet as i am back to running 1.5.4.5 as 1.6 is horrendous on my xp system but wdfme is still using 70-80% when nothing is happening and the drive is unplugged, this goes back for months if not years when you search google and all you find is various forum threads which have been closed because of a new update

i tried contacting email support and they can’t even get that right as it waits for your to write out your problem submit it and then says error and logs you out

all i can say is great hardware, software by monkeys in my opinion
