I really like the idea of WD Smartware choosing lots of ‘common’ files to backup, so wish to use that facility. However, there are also several files that aren’t ‘collected’ in this view that I also want to backup. Is there a way to add any additional files to those automatically selected?

You can choose the “File backup” option. It will allow you to select with files and/or folders you want to backup.
