Question About Disabling Virtual CD

Something in the instructions for disabling virtual CD puzzles me. If you want to get rid of it why are you instructed to update firmware first? Is that really necessary considering the problems people exoerience when updating? Doing a firmare upgrade seems to be rolling the dice on whether you have a usable drive or not after the upgrade. Looking here and other places seem to show a high failure rate for updating.

Hi dude, that’s in case that you have an old unit with a firmware that doesn’t support the VCD manager. If your drive’s native firmware was released after VCD manager due to it’s manufacturing date, then you don’t have to update the unit to use it

Hope it helps!

Talking about Wd drives that uses Smartware backup software we have 2 types. The drives manufactured before 06-15-10 and the drives manufactured over this date.

The old drive have the smartware incorporated to the hard drive in a dedicated space of the unit. It doesn’t matter if you format the drive the VCD will stay on it and the way to disable the VCD is thru the software itself (it has an option in settings to disable VCD) or just downloading VCD Manager from the web site.

For the drives manufactured over 06-15-10 the vcd comes like a simple file on the drive that can be erased manually or formatting the drive.
