Firmware Update Risk

Pertaining to data loss, what risk percentage am I looking at if I attempt to update the firmware on my WD My Book Essential? I have 1.2 TB of data currently stored on my device and no backup locations available. I frequently suffer from my device “bugging out” while accessing and/or writing data; it stops responding, all files disappear, and the only way to get it operational again is to restart the system. On those rare occasions, I’m forced to unplug the power from the device.

My current firmware is 1.022, I’m uncertain if I updated to 3.2.0.8D, but I’m fairly certain I haven’t updated to 3.2.4.2.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I would definitely have another copy of that data. If the firmware goes bad it could brick the drive. Far to many people move their data to an external HD and consider that a backup. A backup is a second copy not the only copy.
