Unable to copy files to passport essential se 320gb

I have a passport essential 320gb and recently i had to erase my drive after forgetting my password.But after that i am unable to copy files to the harddisk.I tried reformatting too.When i try and copy my whole pc freezes at a particular file and i have to plug out the harddisk to get it back to normal.so now basically my 320 gb drive has become reduced to a 300mb one(till which mark the copying goes on fine…but after tat…).Can someone please help!

if that happens the drive might be failing already… try to use data lifeguard tool to check the drives consistency
