WD firmware updater 3.2.0.8 keeps giving error for My Passport 2TB WDBY8L0020BBK-NESN

I have a WD 2TB Usb 3.0 harddrive: WDBY8L0020BBK-NESN

It works fine. Yesterday I saw that the WD firmware updater is requesting firmware update from v1.016 to v1.019. 

I downloaded the latest firmware update software (3.2.0.8). It starts up, detects the drive and downloads the update. It starts updating but then fails. This happened twice.

Luckily it didn’t brick my harddrive, but I am curious to know why it is failing.

I have updated the firmware successfully on the same drive using the same PC twice in the past.

Using Windows 7 SP1.

If the drive is working without problems don’t bother with the firmware updates. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it is the best policy.

@Joe_S Sure, but that’s not a solution for a tech minded person on a tech forum. 

plus it does fix an issue for windows 8, so it is broken.

WD tech guys, if you read this - can you reproduce the problem?
