I’m having exactly the same problem (with a MyPassport Essential), and I am as puzzled as JohnPap as to why “WD Drive Manager Status” needs to “phone home” – because it is indeed what it does, as at least some of the IP addresses it tries to contact belong to WD themselves…
If an explanation is given somewhere, it is not explicit enough, as I haven’t seen anything during the installation process or in the user manual. Searching the web wasn’t more helpful, and the only thing I found was this thread, which I hope will get answered.
When you buy a disk offering full-disk hardware encryption, you definitely don’t want the software managing the drive to send data anywhere without you knowing it. So WD, we are eagerly waiting for more explanations on this: Such things quickly shake your consumers’ confidence, if left unanswered…
