AIUI, your Passport probably integrates the USB-SATA bridge IC on the HDD’s own PCB. I believe Essentials models incorporate AES hardware encryption, so that could be an additional problem. Even in the absence of encryption, you would still need to transfer unique “adaptive” information from the patient PCB to the donor PCB.

It would help a lot of we could see the “bad PCB”, but this would entail opening the enclosure. You might like to ask WD’s Tech Support for permission to do this, otherwise you would be voiding your warranty.
