Not recognizing My Passport Essential

My Passport Essential (SmartWare) Model Number:  WDBAAA3200ABK-00.

When i connect it to my Desktop it tell me that "the USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it "

I plug my external drive directly via USB cable that was supplied.

All updates are to date.

I have tried different ports all give me the same results.

My other devices that connect to a USB port wok well.

I have tried plugging it into my laptop and got the same results.

It has been working fine up until now. Please help.

Check to see if it shows up in Disk Management.

I am too having the same problem with my model no. WDBAAA2500ABK-PESN purchased in April this year. My all USB ports work when plugged with other pen drives. Even this external hard drive works when connected to other pc. Yesterday I emailed to WDC support and today I was emailed a set of questions which I again answered and replied back.

Lets see what is the result.

I have tried on 2 x xp boxes and a Vista box with same problem , installs drivers all ok , disk management sees and shows partitions but options are greyed out ie format , change drive letter etc. Doeds not show up in My computer list either.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  WDBAAA3200ABK
