My passport not detecting on any PC

HI

My HDD not detecting on any PC but power comming into the HDD.

Please help me to troubleshoot how to ge it works normal.

Thanks,

I have a similar problem in that my two oldest Passport drives pass the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic extended tests fine but won’t show up on any of laptops or desktop computer.  The newest and largest one shows up fine using the same USB ports and cable.

I am running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OS on all my computers and the older passports were set up originally under Windows XP 32 bit OS.  Could that be  the problem and if so is there a fix?

I got one Passport drive to work after playing around with it under disk management and only on my oldest laptop. So I recovered those files but still don’t know what the other 9 Gb files on the last Passport are.  I learned that one was offline because of a conflict in disk signature but didn’t know what that means or how to fix it when you can’t access the disk directly.  I found how to get it online under disk management but still couldn’t view it.  Maybe I can using a Linux jprogram and that will be my next step.

Using a Live Linux CD for old version of PC Linux I was able to view the files and copy them to WD My Book and a USB stick drive.  It is a very slow time consuming way to retrieve files from Passport external drive that Windows won’t detect but it worked. I had to try different USB and external drives to find ones that would allow the files to be copied. But know I have those files retrieved and accessible.

Next step is to try format the HD under Linux and see if it can get windows to see it again.Other wise I guess I will have to try figure out how to change the disk signature to eliminate the conflict.

Have you tried a different USB cable? Don’t use a longer one than supplied or connect with a hub.

What to try when your computer won’t read or view your Passport external hard drive:

First try different USB ports

Try differrent cables

Try different computers

Use WD Lata Lifeguard Diagnositc software to check the hard drive.  This seems to work fine even when your computer doesn’t seem to view the hard drive or read any of the data on it.

If the drive passes the extended tests try using a Linux Live CD program to view the files on the Passpsort Drive.

I can view mine fine using an old PC Live LInux program.

If they are worth saving, copy them to a USB stick or another external Hard Drive.  You may need to try several different ones to find ones where your can mount the drives and have permission to copy the files.

Once you retrieve them make two copies on different storage media to preserve them.
