My Passport as boot device

I am running Windows 7 on a desktop with a WD hard drive. I purchased a WD My Passport Edge (a USB device) and received Acronis True Image WD edition (build 14,184) with the purchase of my WD hard drive.

I would like to know if it is possible to use Acronis True Image to clone my WD hard drive to my WD Edge and then boot my system from the USB device.

Note: my BIOS appears to recognize a USB external hard drive.

Is this as straightforward as running True Image and telling it to clone my HD to my USB device?

How should the USB device be formatted/configured in order to do the cloning?

I have not tried this since this type of use is not supported. Lets see  if another user can help out with some tip and information on this matter.
