Encryption Used on My Passport Ultra 1TB Drive

I called tech support to ask them what is the exact type (name) of the encryption used on the My Passport Ultra 1TB Drive.  He didn’t know so I’m asking the community.  Anyone know?  Also if you know please confirm that by adding a password that enables the encryption on the drive (and there is no separate process to enable encryption other than creating a password).

The encryption is enabled whether you use a password or not.
