Could "My Passport" boot Windows?

Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1TB Portable Hard Drive

Hi, just have a question with this product and similar ones. Could I boot an OS like Windows 8 off of this hardrive? Or is it just purely for storage and backup? I’ve read some feedback on other WD products saying that they couldn’t install an OS on it because of WD software that they couldn’t remove even after formatting. A response would be apperciated, thank you!

Also, a bit off topic but why is the 750GB model more expensive? Both use USB 3.0/2.0. I’m guessing it’s Newegg’s fault.

You could try, but the drive may or may not be fast enough for it to work effectively.

I don’t think any of these external drives are bootable to run an OS from and they would be slow. What OS are you using now? With Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise you can creat a virtual hard drive and boot from that. If your hardware supports it you can use a virtual PC like VMware Player or VirtualBox both are free.
