Backing up on My Passport - computer clueless, help please!

Hullo,

Excuse my ignorance of technology, I am not too knowledgeable about computers and/or storage so I don’t blame you if you laugh at my question!

I have a WD My Passport portable drive, so far I have been backing up my files onto it from my laptop/notebook, but my laptop is running out of space and I would like to delete files (photos and some documents) and keep them all on My Passport. 

 

I want to delete files on my laptop but let them REMAIN on My Passport.

In your opinion, is this a good idea? How can I achieve this?

You can do that but it’s not a good idea to trust important data to just one drive no matter who makes it. The forum is full of people who did that then had some problem and are trying to save their data. I would recommend getting a second external so you have the same data on 2 different drives.
