Disk Management issues with MyBook World Edition

My Western Digital NAS is probably 5 years old. It has been in storage since I have been traveling. When I originally set it up. It was on a totally Apple platform (airport extreme router and hub; Macbook Pro.) I have recently settled and set up the network in my new digs. I have recently acquired a new Macbook Pro using OSX Mountain Lion. I set up the NAS with Snow Leopard. Everything works, But I cannot seem to be able to perform any Management of the Public directory without getting errors. Example: when I try to delete an emtpy folder, an error message informs me that a file is in use. When I attempt to copy files, I get an error message which says{The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “.DS_Store” already exists.}.It does not matter what size the file is, I always get the same message. I have also discovered a user named fetching with read write permissions when I check the info any of the data on the public drive. The user does not exist when I log onto the disk management software through bonjour and I cannot delete the user because the icon is greyed out.

I would like to reset the drive and set it up again, but have files I cannot afford to lose. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You press the reset button on the back of the My Book World for 4 seconds and that wont delete your files. You can also review the steps from the link below to map the drive.

Resetting the My Book World Edition (page 173)

I am familiar with both techniques and have have tried them with no sucess. My biggest concerns are the greyed out user called fetching, which I did not create and the fact that I cannot move or delete files and folders without receiving errors that make no sense. ie:I cannot delete an empty folder because the system says it is use even if I never had files in it.

I know that WD NAS systems are notoriously slow, but this is ridiculous. It took over 24 hours for the folders to show files when I set it up this time. Same equipment as before but newer MacBook Pro.

Hi again, sorry for the delay. As a troubleshooting steps you can also try connecting the My Book Ethernet cable directly to the computer. If the problem keeps happening, I recommend you to contact support directly.

Does the support cost money and am I in the area? Is my problem a networking or NAS OS problem? Also do you think they will still support a machine over 5 years old.?

The reason I ask these questions is that I have dealt with company support sites in the past which take the money upfront. and give bogus support.
