No problem!

I think the metadata is damaged.

I used File Scavenger to restore the files. Cheap and easy.

You need and extra device to restore the files to.

Re: WD Elements 1023 - 1TB - Write Protected - Wont Show - Wont Format

I also facing similiar problem with my somewhat new WD Elements 500GB portable hard drive.

Disk Management in Vista showing the drive as "Not Initialized" and "Unallocated" but not showing off in "My Computer"

Tried accessing the drive on Win XP - Its not showing at all not even in Disk Management.

Tried multiple disk and data recovery S/Ws but no help.....appreciate any help that can help me retrieve my invaluable data.

If it shows try deleting the driver disconnect properly with ion in task bar. Reboot system and hook drive backup it should load a new driver. Sometimes that works.

Re: WD Elements 1023 - 1TB - Write Protected - Wont Show - Wont Format

I am having exactly the same problem with my Elements 1023 500GB.

- It does not show in My Computer

- When I try to Initialize it In Computer Management it says "This media is write protected".

Tried:

- changing hex value in registry for locked devices - NOT WORKING

- deleting driver in Device manager, rebooting and plugging in - NOT WORKING

- trying to use DISKPART tool in CMD, it doesn't list the disk at all - NOT WORKING

Even if we ignore the data on it, I have no idea how to re-format it so I can use it again, or does this problem mean it's dead for good?

If you want to write off the data try deleting the volume in disk management and reformat.

Re: WD Elements 1023 - 1TB - Write Protected - Wont Show - Wont Format

the same problem with my external HDD WD Elements 1021 1TB, i'm quite desperate now :smileysad:

it didn't show up in My Computer, but it does in Disk Management. But I can't do anything, there's always a message: The media is write protected.

I bought it 2 months ago but i put much data into it.

Already asked Technical Support for help but they said it's defective and must be replaced.

Any solution :mansad:

File Scavenger has its own website and a support section in here. Try to review the user guide and the FAQ, it is very handy.
