I use the 64 bit version of windows 7 with the 2TB drive attached via a usb 2.0 interface.
When I do large file copies, the drive regularly hangs and just stops transfering any data in either direction. To the point where it takes 10-20 minutes to transfer 8GB.
It's obvious that its hanging as the white led on the back, goes solid white instead of blinking as it does during normal transfers. In general, it recovers from this and will continue the copy, only to get wedged again.
This repeats a lot.
Is the firmware on these drives defective?

I suspect the green technology in the driver and there is not enough activity to let it finish. Check these out they may help http://community.wdc.com/t5/Other-Externals/WD-Ele

I really doubt that it. It occurs during hte middle of big file copies where the disk is being used heavily.

ok, it's not the drive. It's either windows or the usb controller/dock part of thsi drive.
why? I got so annoyed with it, I ripped the drive out of the case and stuck it in my esata dock and it works perfectly fine. As my esata dock also does usb, I'm going to try it out with that, though I have my doubts it will make a difference (though wont be an apples ot apples comparison as probably wont be going through the usb hub I have.

I know that, but this is a backup drive that I'm using as a write once medium, if the drive dies, the warranty won't help me that much, and I got it for $50'ish on black friday, it will cost me a decent percent of that just to ship it back to them anyways.
I'm mostly interested in documenting my results so that if others experience the same thing they can know they are not alone.
