Thank you for everyone who posted the tutorials on how to upgrade the Twonky Server software for the My Book Live drives. I too was very frusterated that My Book Live would not stream video to my Samsung Tv via DLNA. Yes all that is needed is a Twonky software upgrade, and I am happily streaming video now. Please note you will need to puchase a new Twonky Server software license, the trial is 30 days but after that you will need to pay $19.95. I used the free Putty ssh software program using Windows 7 to upgrade my drive, and thought I should share my steps here, its very straightforward, and I updated the links to the newest Twonky software version 6.0.34 as of 07/29/11.
All credit goes out to Dav M and Gordon who initially started the tutorials and most of the steps from mine are cut and pasted from Dav M’s. Thanks man!
Before proceeding make sure your WD My Book Live firmware is updated to the latest version.
In your web browser go to your WD My Book Live Local Network Interface at: YOUR MYBOOK LIVE IP ADDRESS/UI (ie:192.168.0.???/UI
Go to “Settings”
Go to “Utilities”
Go to “Import/Export Current Configuration”, then click “Save Config File”.
Open saved file with a text editor ie: notepad.
In the text file look for "ssh_enable=“disabled” and change to "ssh_enable=“enabled” and save.
Go back to the Import/Export Current Configuration and import the file you just edited. This now enables SSH on your drive for the Putty program to work.
Thanks for the instructions. I cannot run the unzip command from the Putty shell - it seems that the command does not exist on the WD drive. I would appreciate any help.
I’ve just followed all these instructions and am very happy with how Twonky works now, and that my Sony BluRay player now picks it up.
Unfortunately, now the mybook live UI software doesn’t seem to be working. When I go to the IP address, it used to redirect to /UI but now I just get a 404. Anyone experienced this, or have any ideas how to fix it please?
Have you checked that the MyBookLive IP address for the UI is correct? Mine changed after doing the update. Fix is to just modify the IP of the UI link…
I just got into this topic as I have similar problems and was analysing for quite some time the cause of my problem - which was that my Philips Blue ray player needs loads of time before starting a video (any video) from the WD MyBook (with Twonky 5 of course) if it starts at all. So after all kinds of tests, including playing a video from the PC using WMP and from a Dreambox with uShare whereby both started a video in a matter of seconds, it became obvious that the problem lies in WD. A dissapointment that I can now share with the participants of this topic.
After reading all posts I’m now replying to WDTony who is saying, among others, WD is happy with Twonky 5. Dear WDTony I hope very much you have read everything written after your post, to see how much time people, who have purchased your product, had to invest into solving their problems with your product. Whereby they had already located the source of the problem and asked you to upgrade Twonky to 6. Which you (WD) haven’t done. The community had to find a workaround, helped each other to do your job, and are now happy your device now does something that it should have been able to perform from the very beginning. And instead of upgrading to Twonky 6 in your latest firmware, you are offering some sophisticated functionallity that nobody asked you for… this is sad…
Now, as I don’t intend to upgrade to Twonky 6 myself I would really like to have an answer from you whether you plan to upgrade Twonky and when?
p.s.: There is, however, a bright side of the story. The community! Guys, you are showing such a level of solidarity, persistence and invention that I have to bow to it. Unfortunately WD doesn’t deserve any credit for that.
Were did I say we were happy? I answered that for the most part Twonky was stable and reliable. Not that it makes any difference to you but most of our competitors are on lower versions of twonky than we are. I wonder if there is a reason why people haven’t upgraded to version 6???
These will be my last comments on this thread. I mentioned this in other threads that we are examining all options for this fall. About all I can say.

Tony
Tony, stable and reliable are important qualities for software included in mass-scale products such as those sold by WD, but you are lacking some other important terms such as “compatible” or “upgradable” or “cutting-edge”. I thoroughly tested and scrutinized media format streaming from my PC to my Samsung DLNA TV before deciding to drop cash on a new NAS, only to be disappointed that the new 3TB NAS cannot handle what my PC and a FREE Media Server can accomplish. This is both disappointing and total [Deleted] And your excuses, on the behalf of WD, are not solving the problem. If you work for WD, why don’t you give us a solution just as all these other “hackers” are doing for this thread? In fact, I’m glad you stated your departure, as you have added nothing to resolve the issue.
I am pissed off. I work long hours and have a family to take care of. Long gone are the days of solving [Deleted] like this. I expect in this day and age to buy a “media server” from WD that can keep up with a TV that I bought from Samsung. WD is failing in tihs respect. fix it.
My Maxtor from 5 yrs ago works. how [Deleted] is that?
Tony is not posting in the thread any longer, and I don’t blame him, but I did want to tie off on something here. Here are a few things that I can and will say:
We will have updates to this product down the road
We are aware updating Twonky would resolve some issues and we are working on a solution for resolving these issues which may or may not be a Twonky update.

I have to apologize to Tony… It is true he didn’t say “We are happy…”, but “Are we happy with Twonky 5? For the most part it is been reliable and bug free.” Exuse me Tony for my misinterpretation.
But anyway, WD does care. In many forums the company staff doesn’t answer at all.
And, yes, according to Toretto there are plans to solve the problem! Looking forwart to the new firmware!
Worked like a charm Handyhand. Even a linux n00b like me was able to copy and paste this in my Macs Terminal. My UI is working and after I bought the new version of twonky everythings great.
Thanks to all for the twonky update instructions. Works great with my Samsung Blueray player. It didn’t stream much with version 5. If you are waiting for an upgrade from WD, you might as well use step 4 from Tony. The ‘netflix enabled’ WDTV plus I purchased after netflix came to Canada, didn’t work for Canadians. Check the forum on that issue! They weren’t even sure one would be available. Fortunately Nintendo’s WII had the software available in a few weeks! Needless to say the WDTV went back. It took WD almost 6 months to add the software to the WDTV (so I here), but I can’t confirm that. I waited a long time to purchase thie WD Live, and am ticked off that I have to spend another $22.00 to get it to work the way it is supposed to, although I probably voided any warranty.
Hi to all, I tried to follow your guide and everything went just fine untill zip uploading.
It was connected to the server, but then an error occured: HTTP request sent, awaiting response… 404 Not Found2011-08-29 08:34:06 ERROR 404: Not Found.
Please help, while right now the twonky doesn’t work…
