mac book air

I have a mac book air running OS X 10.7.3 with a new 2TB MBL drive.   My wireless goes through a uverse wireless router made by 2wire, model i38HG.  I bought the MBL to store iphoto library, but it is taking hours to move files that should take minutes.  Are there settings I should be checking?  I am still new to using the Mac so any help would be great.  If this does not get faster I will have to just buy a USB HDD and deal with the wires.
