Hi,

I also was stuck on the “Upgrading at (10%)”, so i decide to do it manually and I did work, I was able to upgrade it.

here are the steps a used:

* Download the upgrade file using my PC, then copy the firmware (apnc-021012-129-20120308.deb) to the NAS public directory

*login to my NAS drive : ssh root@mybooklive.local

*Manually update it : updateFirmwareFromFile.sh /DataVolume/shares/Public/apnc-021012-129-20120308.deb

* wait and it will reboot

this is my ouput:

MyBookLive:~#  updateFirmwareFromFile.sh /DataVolume/shares/Public/apnc-021012-129-20120308.deb
version_newfile=021012129
version_current=021009124
package_newfile=apnc
master_package_name=apnc

Broadcast message from root@MyBookLive (Thu Mar 15 16:44:29 2012):

The system is going down for reboot NOW!
MyBookLive:~# Connection to mybooklive.local closed by remote host.
Connection to mybooklive.local closed.

Regards,

So, basically

a) you copy the deb file to the root folder of your shares

b) you ssh to MBL with putty (or something similar) (requires SSH to be enabled in the MBL)

c) run script: updateFirmwareFromFile.sh /DataVolume/shares/Public/apnc-021012-129-20120308.deb

d) wait until upgrade is finished and MBL restarts

Am I correct?

Anything new on this “UI” problem?

I got the alert about new firmware and decided to give it a go.  The past few updates have gone without incident.  I’ve been downloading the update file first, and then using the “Dashboard” (aka UI) to do the update using the local file.

This one went OK, at first.  The update screen went from 5% to 10% then 50%, 70% abnd 90%.  It finished in about 7 or 8 minutes, and I got the success message and the success e-mail.

The screen went back to the Dashboard, but only with a menu bar across the top.  I tried to use the “Settings” menu to check the firmware version, but got no response.  I think I was able to start the Dashboard one more time using the right click menu of the “Quick View” item in the task bar, but it was unresponsive.  I tried rebooting the PC and then couldn’t get Dashboard to start.  I just get a blank screen and a “Waiting for 192.168.2.10”, which is, of course, the local IP address of my MyBookLive.

Access to the files on the MBL is normal.  I really only use it as a basic shared file server.  No remote access, no media serving, etc.

I tried rebooting the router and got no change.  I have updated the WD Smartware on 2 of my networked PCs and get the same thing on both.  File access works OK, and Smartware can see the MBL, but no access to the UI.

The only thing I need to try is a full power off restart of the MBL, which I can’t do until later today.

Any suggestions?  I never messed with the shell access, so I can’t see how I can do any future updates without the Dashboard.  Will this have to go to a RMA situation?

Thanks!

HumpMan:

Once your UI is hosed, you’re basically unable to manage the drive, so adding users and reconfiguring anything having to do with security is not possible. That includes adding remote access from WD2Go and WD Photos.

Updating firmware, for what little it’s worth, is still possible directly from the Quick Access menu, when a new firmware is released. Good luck.

WD:

I havent’ seen anyone on this forum get the UI problem resolved by any means other than RMA. In my case, that’s not an easy option without buying another drive to back up this one first. I got this drive to back up an old PC I was getting rid of, and it has many years of family photos and videos stored on it.

When I do make the move to replace this drive, it’s definitely not going to be a WD product, and based on this experience, I will be posting negative reviews on Amazon and other sites.

updating seems ok. But still problems!

After updating: problems with pictures on my tv not solved. (small pictures, see other topic). Twonkey isn’t updated.

After updating: NEW problem: My music is NOT playing well anymore. On tv the twonkey-server music errors in playing. Speeding up the music with errors. How sad, this WAS working FINE before!!!

I have not tested my movies jet, but this does NOT look good… I am very disappointed for the moment.

Myron,

Your post about the Issues in our code is incorrect. If you look at the term “dry-run”,  it is just that… a Dry run of the safepoint… not the real thing… So the exclude is not needed. You shouldn’t really post stuff like this if you don’t have the facts…

Those having issues of the download being stuck at 10% can reboot the My Book Live, then download the update manually, and apply the upgrade manually. We are investigating why the firmware update gets stuck at 10% for some people.

If you have issues with the Dashboard being inaccessible, please contact our customer support team to help you out. You can still access your data through normal means (Samba, AFP).

We are looking at a more substantial update in April to address some of the issues that have cropped up over the last few months. As a note, this does not include a new Twonky version.

Although I never lost access to my data, I still can’t manage or configure the drive, or take advantage of its features, like WD2Go or WD Photo.

How would you react if your car dealer said dismissively, “No, the heater, air conditioning, and windows don’t work, but you can still drive it”?

I have spoken with customer support, and they suggested an RMA, but with the amount of data I have on this drive, I’ll have to go out and buy another drive of the same size to back this up before sending it in. Would they agree to sending me the replacement first?

Update: Sorry, I completely messed up that car dealer analogy. It’s as if your car dealer had said “We took out your dashboard, so you won’t have a speedometer, gas gauge, light switches, radio, or AC controls, but hey, you can still drive it.”   -That’s what I meant.

Update sucessful. Everything still works. Still Twonky Server 5.1.9

Well, here’s an update for my situation.

As I said earlier, the update seemed to go OK, and I got the e-mail about it completing successfully.  But I never got the restart e-mail, which I expected.

File access is normal, but I could not get the Dashboard (aka the UI) to load.

I used the Quick View to shut it down and then powered it up again to restart it.  It started correctly, with the LED going through the correct color sequence.

I tried loading Dashboard from one machine (Windows XP) and the initial background screen did appear.  I picked the “Settings” option and I got this white box with a “Waiting” message and a spinning thing.  After some minutes, probably 10 or so, the Settings menu DID appear.  I clicked on Updates to see the version, and after 10 minutes or so, it did appear and did seem updated.  Just for testing, I clicked on “Shares” and after a while, I got a timeout message.  I went back and forth between the main Settings menu and the Shares menu and it worked once, but each screen taking about 10 minutes to show.

I then shut down my browser and tried to bring up Dashboard again using the Quick View.  So far, it hasn’t shown up and it’s been probably 20 minutes or so.

So I did get it to sort of work once, but it’s certainly not reliable.  Something is still not right.

@ WA_Billy:

They certainly will agree to sending a replacement first and let you return yours upon receipt of the replacement but, only after you give them your credit card information and let them place a hold in the amount of MSRP plus tax for an identical drive. At least that is what happened in my case and I must note that per WD customer care, the replacement currently on its way to me by UPS 2nd day air is not a new replacement but a recertified one. In most cases, you are required to pay the shipping charges to ship the faulty drive back as well.

Edit: I should have mentioned earlier that upon receipt of your faulty drive, the hold on your credit card will be released and the remaining warranty on your original drive will be transfered to the replacement within 60 days.

Another update…

The Dashboard did eventually come up, and I picked the Settings option.  It took 3 minutes and 15 seconds for it to load.  I was able to pick from the options on that menu, like “Updates,” etc, pretty normally.  It actually seemed pretty normal for a while.  I even ran the short diagnostic and it took the 2 minutes it said it would, and gave a passing grade.

I got bumped out, somehow back to the main screen and taking the “Shares” menu again, it took a bit over 4 minutes to load, but it did load.

So it is behaving better, but still slow.  Could there be some sort of background processs, like re-indexing, or something of the sort that is preventing the UI from behaving normally?  And if so, will things get better as that process approaches completion?

The fact that the UI system still works, albeit slowly, indicates that there are no missing files.

I’m going to let it run for a day or so and see if things approach “more normal.”  I still want to confirm that it’s sleeping like it’s supposed to.

WDTony, I’m still on 1.03.03 with no problems but have been wanting to upgrade for awhile to get some of the new functionality. Would it be safe to say I should wait till the next update in April? Seems to be many issues with this release and maybe it should be pulled till you guys figure out what’s wrong.

That’s…   discouraging, to say the least.

They want me to pay full retail first, then end up with the refurbished unit from the last guy who had the same problem?

And I pay for shipping? For THEIR problem?

Don’t want to be a pest, but I did want to give another update.

Right now, it takes about 7-8 minutes for the initial Dashboard screen to come up.  I’m using Firefox as my default browser.

Within a screen, the sub screens seem to be pretty normal.  Moving between main screens seems  to take 3-4 minutes.

I was able to get to the SSH configuration screen and enabled it, just in case.

Have a 2Tb MBL, got email that firmware was available, got home, installed firmware ( took approx 10-15mins )

Everything up and running - clean as a whistle.

No new features, just fixes … however Menu UI does seem to be a bit more responsive  :)

Right everyone. When you perform the upgrade, be aware that there is some script performed during the upgrade to 2.10.12-129 which is not working correctly, but so far things things are working properly.

This may explain why some MyBook Lives are getting bricked or the update throught he Web II is not working, getting stuck at 10%. I have made Western Digital aware about this issue weeks ago but it’s either been overlooked or ignored.

For my MBL the upgrade was performed by invoking the script to upgrade from file from the Linux command line.

The files that should not be in the root directory are . . .

I’m scared. Mine is also stuck at  Upgrading 10%

I never had issues in the past… I’m going to follow steps in this thread, hopefully it fixes it. If I loose ANY data I will stop using WD products. You’d think they test these things before a mass roll-out.

Update: My God Jesus…

I almost had a heart attack. Did the method recommended by one of the users (re-update from the red exclimation point) then a reboot, red light. Unplugged for 5 secs then plugged back in. Attempted to ssh after a bit then it reponded but didnt let me in with the pass. So I went to the UI and saw this:

Now it still shows this garbage but I can now access my files and junk…

After a reboot, it shows a blue light for about 15 seconds, then a red light for a good 45 seconds, then no light. At this point I can access my UI and I get this garbage from the pic:  http://pastebin.com/nQjQrXND

Clicking the red exclimation does nothing because the text is in the way. I’m going to call them tomorrow ( http://support.wdc.com/contact/index.asp?lang=en) and see if they can send a new one so I can backup to it then send the corrupt-firmware one back. Should still be under warranty from NewEgg Canada. Meanwhile I’ll just leave it on like I have been using it for the past  9 months.

The same exact thing happened to me as well. After the upgrade, the web interface seemed to not work, but then I realized it just takes a long, time to load.

I am currently trying to load the /UI/ssh page to enable SSH just in case.

I have too much data on the drive, plus I can’t RMA, or to be exact it wouldn’t be easy at all since I’ll have to ship it to US then wait for the new one, also I’ll basically lose all my data.

There has to be a fix for this, isn’t there a way to “rollback” to the previous firmware?

I can’t believe WD would release such a glitchy firmware to the public.

We need a solution, fast.

IMHO they should pull the firmware before more people partially or fully brick their NAS devices. Just doesn’t make any sense to keep it up with all these reported issues.

I also had problems updating. It stopped at 1%. I waited for 15 minutes but nothing. I rebooted the NAS and manually updated the firmware which worked fine for me. Now the web interface is much slower but it’s working. I’m working with a iMac 27"  from 2010 with Lion 10.7.3 and Safari 5.2 (beta).

So I booted it up this morning and the red light was gone, but still had the issue. Called them up this morning, was on hold for a good 15 minutes before I got to someone. I gave my SN to the guy and told him the issue. He said the only way it could happen if you have a poor internet connection during the upgrade which is total BS because I never had this problem in the past, and my network is rock solid, but he insisted it was not a common issue. I told him about all the posts on this thread and he ignored me. I told him my address for the RMA and he said it was from the US and I’m in Canada (got the drive through newegg). He said that just means instead of 3-5 business days it will be 5-7. Initially he said I should backup the drive but I said I had 1.8TB used and didnt have enough space to back it up so hes sending me the same model and a free shipping label so I can copy to the new one and return the old one. Its going to charge my credit card but when they recieve the corrupted one, I will be refunded my charge. I asked if it was safe toupdate the new one, he said as long as my internet doesnt cut out (which it doesnt) it should be fine… but I don’t know if I should update the new one when it arrives before copying my files to it. Good thing my warranty is until April 2013. I am fairly disappointed and hopefully my new one doesnt have the same issue. Total call was 38 minutes.
