Drive hangs when trying to copy fles that take space over 1.5TB

My 3TB devive currently has just under 1.5TB used. Now when i try to copy a file that will take it past 1.5TB the device hangs and i have to restart it. So basically it stops working once at 50% capacity. Has anyone else come across this issue?

Hello and welcome, have you tried doing a power cycle?

I’ve tried rebooting from the mybooklive dashboard & powering down and then back up. I also ran a full diagnostic check from the dashboard as well, which took a good few hours, but still get the issue.

I have copied all my stuff onto another drive now (a mybooklive duo) and i am now reseting the mybooklive to factory settings and will try again. It is just odd that it fails on going over the 50% capacity mark, which made me think perhaps there is a backup setting or something that is reserving half the space for backups or something like that.

I have raised a support ticket so will see what they come back with. The unit is still under warranty so hopefully i can get a positive result out of them esp as i went and purchased a mybookliveduo yesterday to move my files onto.

Cheers

Log in via SSH and execute the command  (Lots of posts in the forum about how to do that)

df

Post the output.

Stay logged in via SSH when you start a copy.  When the copy “hangs,” does the SSH session hang as well?

Ok so i did a full factory reset. Copied files with ssh open and it broke again coming upto 40%/50%…and after hanging ssh reports a bus error? So is that useful to know?

Cheers

Holy cow. Dont know what would cause a bus error! Thats pretty severe.

Also check the contents of /var/log/messages

Thanks for taking the time to look at this, i really appreciate it. If you think it is truly spanked i’ll just get in touch with WD to get a replacement as it is still under warranty.

Find below ssh log entries from the session i did ths morning when it crashed. I have no idea about this stuff but i noticed in there it mentions stuff about raid settings. Isit possible it is running in raid 1 (which i didnt think was possible with this device) as as such only 50% of the drive is being used?

I think i have to submit the rest in another post as there is a limit on the number of chars and i cannot see a way to attach files.

Cheers

Yeah, I think there’s something wrong.

Your log files look pretty normal (the RAID is the fact that even though it’s a single disk, the system partition is set up as a RAID for a little bit of redundancy for the operating system.)

The only thing I wonder about is at the very end; I see “waiting for the system to become ready,” but I never see what I see on mine:

Aug 27 07:19:49 MyBookLive kernel: svc: failed to register lockdv1 RPC service (errno 97).

Aug 27 07:20:13 MyBookLive logger: /usr/local/sbin/monitorio.sh: waiting for system to become ready…
Aug 27 07:20:17 MyBookLive : System ready

I get the “System Ready” a few seconds after the file system is mounted.   I don’t see that on yours, even after hours.

Here’s another thing which will indicate if the internal HD has recorded any errors:  issue the command

smartctl -a /dev/sda

You’ll get something like this:

MyBookLive:~# smartctl -a /dev/sda
